Ooh ooh ooh! One more thing! Join @ SNOLAB ’s Blaire Flynn and # DESY Laboratory’s Joseph Piergrossi for the new podcast, “Particle Mysteries: The Coldest Case”. https://www. interactions.org///dark-matter -day/podcast Besides the accelerated expansion of the universe and the universe’s actual birth, # DarkMatter is one of the oldest mysteries in the cosmos that humans have yet to solve. Take up the case with Blaire, Joseph, and their guests! # podcast # DarkMatterDay https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/bda38905381587aba5301bcf2dcc690c4dd0452b035f73c9a21a582e40f82515/view

Let’s end # DarkMatterDay with a video of a single bubble nucleating in a # PICO40L dark matter bubble chamber. This is precisely the kind of behaviour that would result from # DarkMatter interacting with a detector like this. You expect a single, low-energy interaction nucleating a lone, isolated bubble. This is why it’s so critical to construct these with low radioisotope contamination, put the experiment deep underground, and still shield the hell out of it. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/59ff680a667243a031d4b8b6de70fbceeba5b17a55c503e2880c84a2bd412799/view

Happy # DarkMatterDay ! I will share some fare today relevant to this day. Enjoy the mystery of the unidentified matter that has shaped the # cosmos . Maybe you will even want to become engaged in solving the # mystery . There are no easy answers on the constituents of dark matter. Easy stuff was done long ago. :-) https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/11abb096c3e02dbe038a450f3c9fa9d994ba911c83c0a8f685b275a4bd5d3f17/view

From coreyspowell@mastodon.social on Mastodon: For a dose of perspective: Even at the peak speed of the Parker Solar Probe (~180 km/sec), it would take more than 7,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system. Interstellar distances are HUGE. # space # science # travel

Absolutely incredible performance of "The Curious Incident". Anyone who can see this in # Sudbury absolutely should. Its run ends in a week. The cast even weathered an unexpected power bump at the theatre in the closing lines of the play with humour and grace. And I love seeing a good maths problem solved in real time. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/1938b19c58021255c5a523088f0176494ccf344474aa9381a804ff6e456dcde7/view

Yikes. You never realize how much, as a scientist, you travel for work until you are forced to confront your travel record. As part of our immigration process in # Canada , we have to provide 10 years of travel outside Canada and the US. My memory was thin. But I kept detailed records. In reviewing those records, I cannot believe how much I traveled for CERN-related activities. I had only 1 “tourism” trip in 10 years outside the US or Canada. No wonder I hate travel so much.

From gutenberg_org@mastodon.social on Mastodon: English Mathematician John Wallis died # OTD in 1703. In 1657 Wallis published the Mathesis Universalis (“Universal Mathematics”), on algebra, arithmetic, and geometry, in which he further developed notation. He invented and introduced the symbol ∞ for infinity. He similarly used 1/∞ for an infinitesimal. John Wallis was a contemporary of Newton and one of the greatest intellectuals of the early renaissance of mathematics. via @ wikipedia and @Britannica # books # mathematics
