From gutenberg_org@mastodon.social on Mastodon: Austrian Physicist Lise Meitner died # OTD in 1968. She shared the Enrico Fermi Award (1966) with the chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann for their joint research that led to the discovery of uranium fission. Despite her crucial role in its discovery, Meitner was excluded from the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Hahn. Meitner's exclusion from the Nobel Prize remains controversial. However, her contributions to physics are undeniable. # science # physics

Are you ready for this year’s # DarkMatter Day? International Dark Matter Day occurs each year on October 31 ... which in many cultures coincides with another holiday, I am told. :-) This year’s theme is “Everyone Loves a Mystery”. Stay tuned for Dark Matter Day programming, and definitely check out the main site for this annual event: https://www. interactions.org/dark-matter-d ay # education # physics # mystery # astronomy # astrophysics # particlephysics # communication # community

Here is the photo taken by our tour leader when we exited the # Modane Underground Laboratory. That is the tunnel highway between us and the tour leader. He then helped us safely cross the highway before we departed back to the surface building. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/da7d6201cf59b14a6772646038ac180cb246beac21fe1c28b125720510c6da25/view

I was WAY too tired to post this last night, but here was the view when I woke up from a nap during my last flight, last night around 11:30pm. # Toronto I made it home today and am recovering from the 24 hour travel day that was Friday. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/04a7f00cbc7ae31f7c09ca244fc19977fccfbccba9725786d381798e96b7fc08/view

Had a decent night’s sleep after getting to my hotel room around midnight. All things considered, this was an extremely smooth trip (both outbound and on the return). Considering I was connecting from buses to trains to planes in both directions, I have ZERO notes. 😃 After breakfast I plan to hit the road for the drive to # Sudbury before my energy reserves begin to decline again. Being awake for 24 hours at my age has consequences.

Made it to Washington DC. Just a short wait until my last flight, to Toronto. Whew.

About to board my flight back to North America. I won't get into Toronto until quite late tonight, but I am approaching the halfway mark on getting home today ... or, at least, back to Canada. :-) This was quite a trip, and there is just a little bit left to go!

My Time at Modane The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, or LSM, is located directly adjacent to the Italy-France border. Nestled below the Frejus Peak and connected to the Frejus Road Tunnel (a 13km underground highway currently under expansion), the laboratory can be driven into and shields its projects with a maximum of 1700m of rock overburden (the equivalent of 4800m of water overhead, in terms of radiation protection). https:// steve.cooleysekula.net/blog/20 23/10/19/my-time-at-modane/

Had a nice walk through Modane and Forneaux, grabbed some light groceries to make a simple dinner, and am enjoying some rest this evening before the big travel day tomorrow. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/6bf95d45b5ca71c7b4af1a76a9227b1d3a7e1cd3c612813bcf01f96fe52604a1/view

From mcnees@mastodon.social on Mastodon: Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born # OTD in 1910. He established an upper limit on the mass of stable white dwarf stars, and made numerous contributions to astrophysics and relativity. Above the Chandrasekhar Limit – about 1.44 solar masses – stars eventually explode and then collapse into a neutron star or black hole. Photo: Stephen Lewellyn / AIP
