From Sheril@mastodon.social on Mastodon: Had the pleasure of speaking with students at the University of Guelph about science communication today. Back in the olden days when I was in grad school (the first round), # scicomm wasn’t usually considered a viable career path. Many scientists blogged under pseudonyms so they wouldn’t be penalized before tenure. 20yrs later, I’m delighted as new generations of young scientists embrace the constantly changing media environment, including on # Mastodon . Who are your favorite # science follows?

Gorgeous: “When I sit at my typewriter, I don’t get notifications. I don’t see things pop up on a screen telling me what time my next meeting is or sharing bad news happening somewhere in the world. The only ping I hear is the bell ringing at the end of a line indicating that I need to return the carriage.” TYPEWRITERS HAVE KICKSTARTED MY IMAGINATION (The Globe and Mail (Ontario Edition)), Apr 27, 2023 https:// globe2go.pressreader.com/artic le/281754158636872

From mcnees@mastodon.social on Mastodon: Astronomers Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis held their "Great Debate" over the scale of the Universe # OTD in 1920. Curtis argued that our Milky Way was one of many galaxies. Shapley, on the other hand, claimed the Universe was just one galaxy, with our sun far from its center. https:// archive.org/details/scaleofuni verse00shap/page/172/mode/2up

From SuperCDMS https://twitter.com/SuperCDMS on Twitter: SuperCDMS, led by Jamie Ryan and other grad students from @SLAClab, had a very successful outreach event @Stanford as part of the @KIPAC1 Community Day. Several hundred people participated to shoot dark matter at the detector, and watch data acquisition in real time. https://twitter.com/SuperCDMS/status/1650993996091609091/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/a8c7053dd9cbc385b7aac49f318014414bfc3d6cee1a936a4200c1363b8a2283/view

From jeffjarvis@mastodon.social on Mastodon: Confession: I have been on that Other Site for the last few hours talking about Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon because ... well, this is a good example of why I do miss search here. I want to see what people are saying; I want to know the latest reporting; and, yes, I want to quote-tweet NYTimes Pitchbot. Now it's OK if the community of Mastodon decides it doesn't want to be a key place for news but I'd regret that. And I'm not speaking so much as a journalist but as news user.

“Academic bullying slows the evolution of science” (Nature Commentary) https://www. nature.com/articles/s41578-023 -00549-x Provides especially a helpful list of negative behaviors to help especially students and post-docs identify and avoid persons who use this as normal practice in their groups. Also helpful for leaders so they can stay ahead of these behaviors in their teams.
