It was amazing outside today here in Sudbury. After I got home from SNOLAB, I took a walk in the neighborhood. It was shorts-and-tee-shirt weather … and there were still piles of snow on the ground. It was a stunning combo. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/07166d0df3feb32ec24d4d2a85b64edab7271088729a75479132eaab2fed3831/view -

From CERN https://twitter.com/CERN on Twitter: Today’s #PhotoOfTheWeek features the neutron time-of-flight facility at #CERN, also known as n_TOF. Here we see the n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter, a detector for neutron capture gamma-rays, composed of 40 barium fluoride crystals. From matthewfeickert@hep.social on Mastodon: Seeing # SciPyConf be given as an example of a valuable method of engaging with the larger scientific research community today in Peter Elmer's P5 talk made me feel proud to be part of the conference organizing team and hopeful for the future of HEP. :) Just a few years ago SciPy wasn't well known in the HEP, and today it was held up to thousands of senior physicists as valuable for the field. Doubly proud to have IRIS-HEP In conversation from chirp.cooleysekula.net permalink -

Getting pretty excited for my lecture on Friday at 7pm at the Science North Planetarium! The event is hosted and organized by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Sudbury Centre chapter ( https:// sudburyastronomyclub.com/ ). I will be discussing “Astronomy Without Light”. This will be their first event featuring in-person participation since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am honored to be able to help them kick off gatherings once more! https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/96e018bf34c45c3076f6553c775e603bf0c54454d9874cb5c32c6e03d45b3f90/view In conversation from chirp.cooleysekula.net permalink -

“NPR quits Twitter after being falsely labeled as 'state-affiliated media’” https://www. npr.org/2023/04/12/1169269161/ npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label It’s about time. I saw people referring to this story tangentially on Mastodon today without citing the original story. Here is the story that kicked off the speculation about where they will focus their communication effort next (besides, obviously: radio, streaming, and web media). Spring has sprung in Sudbury! It’s 21C right now and absolutely gorgeous outside. Of course, warm air means lots of melting snow … and there were lots of snowbanks to melt. But the heat is making short work of what is left, and I am excited to see the seasons shift yet again. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/6f3121840a3c638280015da0f2dbd8abcde2909bc7b874a106885b9dfa006406/view In conversation from chirp.cooleysekula.net permalink -
