GNU Linux-libre Freeloong update: the FSF and I are struggling to find a reliable yeeloong; there are numerous builds in the pool that are not described in the repo metadata, but those are likely corrupt (bad RAM, etc); expect respins when we're good

.oO para 2018, faço votos para que nossas escolhas sejam respeitadas nas eleições e não cerceadas por subterfúgios tais como adiamento ou cancelamento das eleições, ou anulação de candidaturas através de perseguição política e judicial

huh. that sounds a lot like the first half of my "The Singularity, The Matrix and the Terminator", first presented at LibrePlanet in March, 2016. thanks for saving me from that surprise; I was already planning to watch this speech, now I really have to ;-)

my theory as to why we don't see a lot more decent[ralized] cryp2p systems is that they're fundamentally incompatible with the current prevailing net-access monetization architecture, namely ads and tracking. centralized control seems to be key, or at least convenient, for this unfortunate broken model. perhaps further crypto can be used towards alternate funding models, along the lines of cryptocoin mining, but in a way that ties the proof of work to guessing a (small) key to decrypt the data, or automatable micropayments with GNU Taler, or... maybe we don't need any of that ;-)
-
there's a lot to be improved in current P2P/federation practice when it comes to protecting private keys, though. keeping them in the client app, rather than in the "brains" app, might make some sense; using (gpg-like) subkeys for day-to-day operation, while the main key is safely stored elsewhere, would also be good security practice to reduce the impact of a break-in. but one of the benefits of a truly P2P system is that it would likely be hard to target an attack on one specific user: you can't find their IP, there's no individual server to target, they might even be running behind tor or somesuch
-
limiting app's access to its own data, and dealing with public data only (or encrypted when private) can render vulnerability exploitation mostly pointless

whether you get more or less traffic than non-P2P depends on how popular the stuff you publish or share is. torrents figured out how to share that load so that the interested parties contribute to the distribution without burdening anyone too much
