There's nothing so poisonous as the genius myth. How did Shane MacGowan write alone as many beautiful songs as Lennon and McCartney wrote together? He worked really, really fucking hard. It's as simple as that. It's demeaning to say to somebody "Oh, it's easy for you because you're gifted."
"But you were always a good man of business, Jacob," faltered Scrooge, who now began to apply this to himself. "Business!" cried the Ghost, wringing its hands again." Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, benevolence, were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!" https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/A_Christmas_Carol_(Dickens,_1843)/Stave_1
Wow, that article is some graceful bridge burning. The lower ed cult is slightly different, though. It's not concerned with unearned prestige, or indulging in personal abuses of power, but the constant, grinding Malthusian refrain of "human capital" and "social mobility" as salvation from economic precarity. Your _personal_ salvation, of course; the poor will always be with us, but you can clamber over them and leave them behind if your faith is strong enough. [#Facepalm! And there I go again…]

Matthew DavidsonJohn #Bolton is too crazy for the crazies. Read the stuff he's had published in "respected" foreign policy journals over decades; it's bonkers. The problem is that, assuming a scandal-ridden lame duck executive for the next 2 years (vote, #US citizens!), a newly respectable crazy like Paul #Ryan, refreshed after 2 years of faux-retirement from public life, may in 2020 be up against Hillary "this time, for sure!" #Clinton instead of a candidate who _isn't_ the least popular politician in the country, and it's all over. #Trump and his mini-Nietzsche seriously believe fascism-lite will deliver some form - however selective - of greatness and glory, but they're incompetent. Competent crazies like Ryan don't care about greatness; they just want to import banana republic policy (the "Washington Consensus") back home and make out like bandits while the 99% starve. https://www.vox.com/world/2018/11/1/18052338/bolton-cuba-venezuela-nicaragua-speech-troika-tyranny
I suspect I might come across as a bit misanthropic from time to time. Maybe I should get myself a narrower tar brush.

Matthew DavidsonHere's my problem with well-intentioned people working in neoliberal higher #edu: The system is a big f-off multi-dimensional scam. You know it's a scam, but you think you can surreptitiously slip some of the special stuff under the counter to benefit the students without anybody noticing. However, the students have internalised the scam, they want the scam, they want the otherwise worthless certificate granting them the right to scam others. They each know that they are collectively working towards the end of civilisation, but by God they each intend to be the ruthless Thatcherite spiv standing triumphant upon the mountain of bones as the death knell tolls.

Matthew DavidsonNice to be out in the garden listening to podcasts of an evening, but aaargh! Spiders! Not little ones, either. Where did they come from, all of a sudden? Stone me. This country! I'm off to the embassy. "Tell Her Majesty that, with the greatest of respect, I think that establishing a country here has been a grave error of judgment; a conclusion which - I expect - would garner the support of people who had previously located their countries here and are now regrettably no longer in a position to do so, so I am prepared to be the first to call it quits in exchange for a flat in Shoreditch with spiders of a manageable size and quantity." http://microblog.mjd.id.au/attachment/19814
