@erosdiscordia It’s basically set in an fictional version of Venice where the libra d’oro wasn’t instated until much later (basically the end of the 19th c.), and that a little over a generation after that, the teenage prince of a fictional Ottoman Empire visits in order to choose a wife from among the eligible daughters of the aristocracy, but quickly gets caught up in a demimonde of revolutionary opera artists, senator’s aides, refugees, rebel aristocrats, and sorcerers.

@Dwinkeltje And then there's my partner, who absolutely would buy this for me, and joyfully, but it feels like such a weird thing to say to people, "Oh, yeah, my partner bought me a dictionary for Christmas!" Like, it doesn't feel... romantic or special enough?

• Dad - he thought 75% of the courses I took in college were wastes of my time and intellect ("Why do you need to take two semesters on the history of religion in India? Why are you taking physical anthropology instead of physics? Why are you taking African-American History?") so why would I "need" a book on an endangered language?

• Brother - total cinephile, always buys me DVDs for some reason (haven't had a DVD player in years)

@Dwinkeltje Awwww, thank you! Yeah, it's sort of like, the 4 people who actually buy me gifts based on request all have reasons I don't want to tell them/I know what they'll say:

• Mom - never wants to buy me anything she hasn't decided I don't desperately need (she's on a weird flatware kick this year, while we have a huge drawer of more than we would ever need, even if it doesn't match)

All I want for Christmas is this Venetian-English dictionary I've been pining after for like a year, but I keep being embarrassed to ask for it because it seems like THE nerdiest gift on the planet.

@erosdiscordia I’m working on the first draft of an anarchist YA fantasy novel set in a city that’s kind of an alternate history Venice (Italy, not California).
