@bjoern @bobjonkman Yeah, it's about as secure as SMS (which is to say, not at all). Not meant as a standalone chat service, but as an improved baseline. I'm not entirely sure how possible or easy it would be to bundle end-to-end encryption on top of RCS -- the UP2 spec already requires TLS and IPSec, so it could be possible to extend the spec to allow end-to-end.

@bobjonkman SMS isn't a silo and it's lasted a lot longer than 3 years. Google's only involvement is getting carriers to adopt 1 standard for RCS instead of building 55 different ones; it's just "Chat", not "Google Chat".

@banjofox @distelfliege Make it a slider: 0 = hide input by default, 1 = show input by default, 2 = show input and warning by default

@banjofox @distelfliege I think it's still valuable to "weakly encourage" it by making it a visible text field instead of a completely hidden one (until you click). You can also further "strongly encourage" it by showing a warning before posting an image without alt-text. It doesn't have to be all or nothing; you can choose differing levels of friction.

@mike @bob I'm not personally invested in zot as a protocol, nor in activitypub, but I think AP is a bit easier to understand and more widely applicable. For example: if a service is intended to be public or almost always public, then what benefit does a rich permission system add? In the case of PeerTube, for example, videos are served via WebTorrent, which benefits from having more peers much more than it does from privacy.

ugh i really hope crossposters don't slowly choke mastodon like they did to diaspora*

if you're just crossposting everything you tweet on birdsite then what even is the point of making a mastodon account? that's glorified spam at worst, and a recipe for abandonment.
