@ajr To transfer money, you write a message saying i give this much money to ayy, and you sign it in such a way that it cannot be forged which means I can't steal it from you. But what if you try to spend the same money twice? You could have written the same note but giving the money to someone else too. Which one is then the valid one? The one that came first, but how do you determine which one is first?
A vote? But how do you prevent someone from voting 1million times with fake accounts?
You require people to pay computing power to vote - mining.
Mining takes lots and lots of resources. If you don't have voting, and instead say have a dictator who decides which money came first, then it can be done a lot cheaper.

@lain @tibike Well people predicted a lot of shit some of which panned out and some of which didn't. With some ideas confirmed and some refuted it will be easier to build on top of the good stuff without wasting energy extending the bad ones.
