@checkervest my memory is that 80s movies didn't deal with the origins as much as told you "this person is already a triumphant superior person" and went from there.

What comes to mind is not a superhero movie but rather Wall Street, where Gordon Gekko still ends up with little more punishment than a punch to the face. Similarly First Blood, which sees Rambo as a protagonist who deserves but does not have that preset triumph, 'win' guerilla warfare and then get sent to a hospital.
