      I recently received an email from Netflix which nearly caused caused me to add my card details to someone else’s Netflix account. Here I show that this is a new kind of phishing scam which is enabled by an obscure feature of Gmail called “the dots don’t matter”. I then argue that the dots do matter, and that this Gmail feature is in fact a misfeature. Finally I’ll suggest some ways the Gmail team can combat such scams in future.       So-called parental control apps on smartphones might suck at actually protecting kids from iffy stuff on the internet, new preliminary research from the University of Central Florida suggests. And unsurprisingly, they also seem to drive a wedge between teens and parents.

    @KitRedgrave I was raised very religious. I think a lot of people get a moral framework they might not have bothered thinking through personally otherwise. It's also powerfully -- addictively? - comforting in times of stress and loss. The death of a loved one is much more tolerable if you think of it as a temporary separation.
