I read in the news that someone was arrested for elder abuse. The victim is about my age (but apparently in a lot worse condition). What a way to find out that I'm old.

@clacke When I first saw "högskola" I thought "hog school" ... false cognates. :-)

I can't say for sure what the difference is, because in the US most four-year colleges tend to perform research as well as teach and most universities seem to focus more on research than teaching. I do remember when when the California State College system became the California State University, they had to do lots of work ... including having a certain number of PhD faculty.

I do know that one company brought in interns from both my CSU campus and its nearby UC (University of California) campus. Originally, the UC student interns were placed in supervisory positions ... the thought being they knew more about business and marketing than the CSU students. After a semester, the roles were switched because the UC students were more focused on research than on practice.

(It was a matter for bragging rights that the business school on our CSU campus was AACSB accredited before the business school on the nearby UC campus, back when it was capped at the top 15% of business schools in the country.)

The TM claim mentioned above isn't certain to happen, but I think it is very likely.

The thing about forking #nginx into #freenginx is that they're going to have to come up with a different name pretty quickly, so that F5 doesn't come after them with trademark infringement claims.

Some time back, I told #faveNephew a story about something he did when he was 2-3 years old. He says he's been thinking about it ever since.

It wasn't that important. He was a small child. But he says it tipped him to something he wants to have checked sometime.

Now, when I tell the other nephew (ex #lazyNephew) about things he did at that age, he's immediately embarrassed. To which I say things like "Almost every child in the country was wearing Barney underpants at that time." and remind him that there's nothing to be embarrassed about.

We also talked about being "stuck".

We agreed that you can always just quit / leave to unstuck yourself

#faveNephew called. We talked for almost three hours tonight. Lots of stuff going on in his workplace. We also talked about the kids, about things going on in my other nephew's life (just general ... including some things I don't even "officially" know, but I know), about career and life next steps.

I didn't realize that Soufrière Hills volcano on Montserrat ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soufri%C3%A8re_Hills ) and La Soufrière volcano on St Vincent ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Soufri%C3%A8re_(Saint_Vincent) ) were two different volcanoes. There are also two other Caribbean volcanoes with Soufrière in their names. This makes sense, because it appears that soufrière is french for sulfur

I didn't even know that today was Ash Wednesday. I don't normally pass the big church that would be most likely to celebrate, so I don't know whether they have the kinds of crowds that the big church had in the city where I lived from ages ~8-15. I know that was a long time ago, but my impression at the time was that you couldn't miss the crowds for "holy days of obligation".

Finally some good news. I really dislike how negative the news media have become. More stories like this and less about politics, please.

Does anybody else remember #KYAG drills at school? In case the #USSR launched a nuclear attack, we were to get under our desks with our heads between our knees.

You know the rest: ... and kiss your ass goodbye (KYAG).

Visited a local news site. That was a mistake. Murders, robberies, carjackings, fatal vehicle collisions.

A YELLOW alert at the Kick ‘em Jenny volcano means that the volcano is restless: seismicity and/or fumarolic activity are above the historical level or other unusual activity has been observed or can be expected without warning.
