lnxw48a1I also heard from S. She signed up for a cybersecurity course on #Udemy around Black Friday. This is supposed to be organized around certification requirements for “CySA — Cybersecurity Analyst”. As far as I know, she isn’t Security+ certified, but she does have 20+ years of IT experience, including a former Novell CNA certification.

lnxw48a1Years ago, if your teacher told your parents that you were not completing your homework assignments, your parents would “attack the problem at its seat” and you would make sure those assignments were done correctly and turned in on time. These days, the kids will come to school and say they didn’t do their homework because they had family #xbox time and their parents will acknowledge it.
We can try to resist this wave of generational ignorance, or we can accept that we have created a permanent underclass of aid recipients who are angry at society for not taking care of them the way they expect. Personally, I’d rather get those students working and learning, so that they are competitive in the job market after they graduate from school.
I’m in favor of homeschooling and charter schools, but parents have to be willing and able to do the required work, including learning about the subjects themselves. If they won’t, then those kids are only damaged by homeschooling and other such outside the classroom schemes. That means we will always need public and compulsory schooling.
This reminded me of why we got school resource officers in the first place. After Jonesboro and Columbine, we started hearing about violent encounters on campuses more frequently. No one wants the next generation to be slaughtered before they grow up, locked in with their killers like prison inmates. So police and sheriff's departments started stationing officers on campuses to try and prevent such happenings (with wildly enthusiastic support from parents).

lnxw48a1During the outbound portion of my walk, there were police helicopters from two different agencies circling an area near a school and a shopping area. I saw both city police and county sheriff vehicles speeding in that direction. Later on, I saw school district police and sheriff's SRO vehicles as well.
I checked the local news sites and the Los Angeles television stations' sites, but no one has anything about it. Which is good news, I guess. It means no kids were shot at the school.
By the time I was heading back inbound, the school district and SRO vehicles had departed. The city police and most of the sheriff's deputies were leaving the area.
Also: #step-count: In both October and November of 2023, my steps exceeded 500K (according to my phone). I expect weather, temperature, and the shorter days to prevent this from happening in December and January.
This was in 2016, but I really think the case should have been a criminal case (ending with the dissolution of #Wells_Fargo's subsidiary if not the bank itself, plus prison for all involved managers).
#USDOJ's actions shield high level perpetrators from punishment.

lnxw48a1I wish I could find the book 📕 I read around 1974 where someone proposed a “doughnut” spacecraft in which a high powered magnetic field would compress hydrogen gas enough to cause fusion reactions and thus propel the ship at some fraction of the speed of light. It relied on interstellar hydrogen gas in order to work.
I think their drawings depicted something like a gigantic ramjet engine, with crew quarters and ship control areas embedded inside the walls of the engine.
Almost fifty years later, I would like to see whether the idea could still be viable.
Someone was saying that musicians only do it for their audiences, rather than for the love of music. I thought “then why do so many famous musicians hate the songs that make them famous?” if they were all about pleasing their audiences, I could get a three hour concert with different interpretations of “Cars” or “1999” or “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” without all the less desirable songs that followed.
