lnxw48a1I came in after work to find that my keycards didn't seem to do anything. So I went down to the front desk, where they were trying to reset their whole system. Apparently, a technician had come out to service something and had flipped a software switch, so that now, every lock defaults to unlock after the first key scan. Since their housekeeping staff came in and partially cleaned the room, my door is unlocked until they fix this issue.
No, there was no announcement or sign. I just happened to walk up as two employees were discussing the issue and trying to enter codes to restore the traditional functionality.
I still intend to replace them. Among other reasons, the transfer process was bungled and their customer support staff is far understaffed (average wait time for a call: 1 hour, 30 minutes ... before you speak to a human). But also, they seem to be using a 3rd party for some of their online banking functions and I have serious qualms about that company's security practices.
(And I note that ASP.Net / .aspx is _not_ the reason for my qualms. As far as I know, there are no inherent security issues that come from using .aspx to do your site. This is all idiotic decisions that some human made.)

lnxw48a1Another story: so in sixth grade, I was pretty small. The only students who were smaller were Donny (who hadn’t grown since first or second grade) and Oscar (whose parents were both about 4 feet tall; I saw him when we were in our 40s and he’s still not 5 feet tall), and Wendy (who again hadn’t grown since third grade). I grew a little over the Summer, so when I entered seventh grade, I was no longer in the shortest group, but I still felt that I was still slightly below the median height and weight.
I grew later, up until I was around 22 years old.
Anyway, there was this girl named Stephanie who decided that Black students should not have any non-Black friends. Stephanie was huuuge! Much taller than me and I’d guess she was somewhere North of 200lb. Whenever she decided to to oppress me and my friends, I just ran (or hobbled, I spent much of that year barely walking). She was too large to pursue me.
But eventually, she started sending her thinner, faster friends to capture me and hold me until she arrived.
Imagine being a seventh grade boy and being threatened with a fight by a much taller, stronger, heavier girl. But I lucked out … she pounded another boy and got transferred to a different school … until she beat someone at that school, so they sent her back briefly.
I think her family moved away, because she was suddenly gone again, and I never heard about a triggering incident.
I should clarify. I’m not going to stroll through East Los Angeles, South Central Los Angeles, or even your local “Misdemeanor Meadows” elevated crime zone based on some perception that a criminal that would attack me there would confront me even if I wasn’t in that zone.
But if you’re in a place such as a school, where you and the attacker are there frequently, you can’t escape every time. Eventually, you’ll have to deal with them.

lnxw48a1That was pretty bizarre. They didn’t have special classes for gifted students yet, so our school district created an enrichment program for gifted students and force enrolled us. Then they measured our grades and test scores and had psychologists interview us. The data ended up going to Sacramento, where the state eventually created a statewide program. I moved to another district, where they didn’t have a program
René was a skinny braniac. We were in the same English and "elective" (extended learning for gifted students). I was probably right around 100lb. René was slightly taller and a good 15-20lb lighter. He wasn't a fast runner--not enough thigh muscle.
John was bulkier and heavier than I was. He was taller than I, but shorter than René. One of John's upper arms was probably almost aa big as both of mine together, but he was heavy enough that he still struggled doing pushups.
Our P.E. teacher decided we were going to learn a game few of us had ever seen: soccer. The team I was on had René and John. John wasn't great at soccer, but he was able to kick the ball harder than René. As a result, John became angry that René was unable to retain control of the ball. He challenged René to a fight after class.
(I'd been in an introductory martial arts course at the community center, injured my knee, and had only recently been able to move it enough to walk freely. I knew I hadn't learned enough to use any of it in a fight.)
There was zero chance that René was going to win, but he stayed there as the class headed for the locker room. John walked over to confront René. I got between them and pushed them apart. John turned to me, said "don't push me". I said "are you looking to start a fight?" and squared for a confrontation. John backed down.
Afterwards, I asked René why he'd stayed there, facing an unwinnable fight. He said if he didn't, John would be forever looking for a chance to fight. He preferred to get it over with.
What I learned is that when someone is determined to use violence against you, your only choice is whether to sail into the battle or whether to let the battle catch you as you attempt to flee.
I think someone should pay more attention. Unless Putin's invasion is decisively turned back, the global war will come, regardless of our concessions to try to have "peace in our time". Just as it came when the German dictator was not opposed forcefully early enough.
