@clacke After reading that thread, I'm struck by the way no one mentions that Twitter's infra was constructed in the hair on fire "fail whale" days. There are probably still millions of finger in dike scripts and patches that no one wants to touch because they don't want to crash the system.
It is likely and expected that the new super programmer would stumble over these, and if there wasn't the culture of communication--the time spent talking about random stuff that opens a new employee to discussing the issues they're finding--to teach the intern to talk about such things, I'm not sure an "engineer" would do more than a programmer, except maybe stick around long enough to figure things out.
Apparently, others have said the same, so he may get called into the office for a talk.
I really think this job is a lot more social than people expect, but there are similar jobs that have more interfacing with machines and less interacting with people.
I will be shuttering the remaining !osp server. Having been without income for half a year, I lost control of the domain and then the #VPS locked up so hard that even remote console tools have not restored control.
I'll relaunch with another name and hosting set up when possible.
> Finally, the Federal Reserve Board on Sunday announced it will make available additional funding to eligible depository institutions to help assure banks have the ability to meet the needs of all their depositors.
A part of the joint announcement that people don't seem to have noticed. They're saying that even bank runs won't be allowed to collapse other banks.
Supposedly, (saint?) Malachy, a 12th century bishop, predicted all the future popes ... including predicting that the current pope (Pope Francis) will be the last.
I suppose it is like Nostradamus, whose poetic prophecies can be interpreted to cover every major event since his time.
Weird. I saw that on my tablet the other day ... the one that isn't covered by the VPN subscription.
In this case, though, GS tries to check all URLs during posting and rewrites them to point to whatever it receives back. So I suspect that Google / YouTube thinks this is a bot and rewrites the URL to point to their "suspicious bot" page which then gets embedded in the GS post.
> enabling the FDIC to complete its resolution of Silicon Valley Bank, Santa Clara, California, in a manner that fully protects all depositors.
Made whole.
They'd better unleash USDOJ to go after anyone in SVB who did anything questionable, or this wil encourage big banks to take on more risks with depositors taxpayer protected money.
