The burden always falls on disabled people and other marginalised people, doesn’t it. Always. People with privilege never pull their weight.

I just saw that the EU have approved a ban on disposable plastics, and I have mixed feelings!

I take my spork and a clean hanky with me everywhere. Turning down disposable forks and napkins feels right every time. But a ban *will* hurt disabled people disproportionately.

Trans and #nonbinary genders are recognised as being real and valid by the NHS and by the UK government.

There’s not two sides to this issue. When there’s a BBC documentary about travel you don’t get flat-earthers on, do you?

NOOOOOO please, you have to do it because you WANT to, because you don't like meat and dairy and honey and stuff, otherwise you'll just be making yourself sad for very little impact! What you eat has a huge effect on how you feel in your body/mind/heart, and only powerful institutions can cause the kind of industrial change we need anyway.

Instead, maybe every time you eat a cheeseburger you take part in some kind of environmental activism?

Like, I don’t think you understand how bad it is on Mars and how difficult and expensive terraforming is, right? Compared to that, fixing our huge climate change problem is peanuts.

I made a flow chart of which #Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

@luka Every recent, public, original (non-reply) toot that becomes known to your instance makes it into the federated timeline - and that includes toots that are boosted or entered into the search box.

Hold on I think I have a diagram that might help...

Two great things you can do to make the fediverse more diverse and interesting:

1) USE LOTS OF HASHTAGS. It's not spammy! It helps people find stuff they're interested in, since the search is intentionally limited to tags to prevent abuse.

2) BOOST THE GOOD STUFF. It gets it into new federated timelines, which is vital for smaller instances with fewer connections. It also helps with hashtag searches, since they only bring up toots known to your instance via follows and boosts.

I was talking with folks earlier about how people don't use hashtags as much as they could on #Mastodon, and it's because seeing a post full of tags is kind of icky, and people don't want to feel spammy.

It's actually really cool that people are being considerate and trying not to spam each other! I'm into that. 🙂 But I'm also sad because it means it's harder to find posts.

So I made a Github issue for putting tags at the end of posts under a "show tags" button.

If you're about to respond to someone on Mastodon with advice or information or critique or disagreement, PLEASE read their post again to make sure that they have invited that.

If they haven't asked for input they probably don't want or need it, but if you still think they'll be interested in what you want to say, ASK before replying.

"Hey, are you asking for advice, or just venting?"

That's ALL you need to say.

I'm tagging it #netiquette (what a great word, haha) but it's universal.
