At newspeak house. We have had "security theater" for the last 10 years of #geekproblem just overheard a hackathon for "poverty theater" is happening soon. The problem of poverty is a political/economic issue. Apps and tech are not a solution, and it would be disgusting to think privileged people are building there careers on this.

public authorities "can secretly compel tech companies and individual technologists, including network administrators, sysadmins, and open source developers – to re-engineer software and hardware under their control, so that it can be used to spy on their users. Engineers can be penalized for refusing to comply with fines and prison"... sounds like a nightmare but it is reality in the #UK and #Australia https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/12/new-fight-online-privacy-and-security-australia-falls-what-happens-next #eff #spy #privacy #security

With indecent speed, and after the barest nod to debate, the Australian Parliament has now passed the Assistance and Access Act, unopposed and unamended. The bill is a cousin to the United Kingdom’s Investigatory Powers Act, passed in 2016. The two laws vary in their details, but both now deliver a...

Am finding the noise is up on mastodon and the signal is losing out. Were are the tools to tune focus? I like DIY so not complaining, wondering if this is part of the social/ui/tech shift in this #openweb space. Constructively what's your idea on this?

Don't get me wrong, LetsEncrypt is doing great work and has definitely lowered the barrier to entry for SSL. But it grinds my gears when technical folks don't take that *little* bit of extra effort to lower the barrier to entry as much as possible. It shows a lack of empathy and a myopia towards whatever technical problems they're trying to solve.

And it also means I'm going to ignore whatever they're saying until someone writes the simple "explainer" blog post.

@Shamar @aral @wolftune @cwebber Right. It's not that the sponsor directly orders this or that to happen. It's that once your event depends critically upon the sponsor then anything critical of them becomes something to be removed, or at least not talked about.

The massive centralization around Google and Facebook and their influence not just on software developers and web standards but the whole of society is something worth discussing and criticizing.

They say populism is on the rise, but the people they call "populists" have almost nothing in common with each other. They talk about Corbyn and Trump as if they're a part of the same movement. That's of course ridiculous. In fact the non-populists are much more of a unified movement than the populists. What we're witnessing isn't "the rise of populism", it's the decay of neoliberalism.
