@Hamishcampbell @kaniini Yes that's also important. When the silo scandals happen we need to be there with a compelling story about how the decentralized internet works and why people should join it.
On keeping instances running perhaps some distributed backup system would be a good idea, where you can restore from backups held by other instances in a mutual support network. -

@kaniini @bob I have been working in this area for more than 20 years and have seen hundreds of #openweb projects fail from takeing VC or NGO funding. I have not seen one seceased after swolling the poisen. if it is not #4open its heading for the trash, its just how the world is. Now ideas for non pixy dust funding are alwase worth hearing about, and will support :)

@kaniini It's not really about features. I think @aral had a video about this a while ago. Hubzilla has way more features than Facebook. It could be said that it has too many features. Even gnusocial has more features than Twitter. You can do cashless bartering in gnusocial if you have the right plugin.
The reason why Facebook and Windows 10 have billions of users isn't because they're technically better than alternatives. The UI of Facebook is one of the worst I've ever encountered. -

I have been a beneficiary of grant funding and it's good access to money (I was actually ready to lose hosting on the site as I could not afford it - this was not a software project though). And after that you write a report which just needs to match the grant's purpose.
The big drawback to it is that you need a longer term, what to do when grant funding runs out, since ordinarily I would not be getting a $xk income with the project. So grants are good as a big flush to work on a component of the project that would hopefully lead to more ways longer term to financially sustain yourself. -

i think i am going to need to write a blog post about why taking money from guilty billionaires and institutions is the most effective way of actually achieving our shared goals of scaling fediverse development up to the same level of competitiveness as the proprietary services.
you see, we need to get *ahead* of those services and start putting out new features they haven't thought of yet. but we need to have all the features they already thought of.
scaling the fediverse to be a serious contender verses facebook/twitter is doable, but it is going to require serious, stable commitments of funding. community fundraising like patreon simply isn't going to scale things up fast enough. -

Apparently someone managed to call Amazon's support, tricked and convinced them into changing my account's email, ordered something, and eventually proceeded to delete my entire account.
Now Amazon's support refuses to help me for data protection reasons π
Looks like it's enough to know someone's address to hijack their #amazon account.
