    Max: What, oil? Natural gas?

    Aunty Entity: Pigs.

Max: You mean pigs like those?

    Aunty Entity: That's right.

    Max: Bullshit!

    Aunty Entity: No. Pig shit.

    Max: What?

The Collector: Pig shit. The lights, the motors, the vehicles, all run by a high-powered gas called methane. And methane cometh from pig shit.

Couple of things just in case I run out of time,,,

Pubcrawl has a few interop issues with Mastodon, but nobody is willing to look into why on that side. What I've done is to go back to the spec and all the latest working group decisions and I'm trying to implement it faithfully. If there are problems making it work, you may have to wait for a real communications project to try and federate with before things get solved. Once there's interop with somebody/anybody, you can branch off that to open federation to the walled garden. At the moment we're trying to be faithful to the spec so that somebody can read the spec and look at the packets and figure out who's implementation is buggered.

Multimedia content is going to be sent as an 'Article'. There's a good chance Mastodon will never allow multimedia content. Fuck them. Try and find somebody sensible to work with. We'll send plain text and microblog stuff as a 'Note' which is what Mastodon uses. Attachments/images are all separate and appended to the end of the content, so this won't work at all for story-board narratives and signatures will break if you have to modify somebody's content to fit that representation. If you want to get support, look at News organisations of any kind. They know how multimedia content needs to work. The ActivityPub folks all have their noses so far up Eugen's bum that you aren't going to get any support from them and nobody therein has any experience with real world communications or federation issues. They're web people, and most are kids who've never done anything like this before.

Apple appears to have removed third-party cookies entirely in its latest browser release. This is a problem for decentralised permissions; but thankfully only applies to images and media elements. My thinking if other browser vendors follow suit is to re-purpose the 'sslify' module to proxy private photos/videos. These can and should be buffered/streamed. At that point it's probably a good time to abandon the social networking space and concentrate on content management, since openwebauth will still work just fine; but private media in your stream is going to suck up extra resources to proxy. It's still workable but not as elegant.

Hopefully I'll still be around and will take care of all this stuff, but just in case I'm not....

    @maiyannah My personal stance on this is #forktheweb ;

which comes at a convenient time because of the subjugation of other W3C proposed standards. On the plus side, it means there are now no rules. On the minus side, it means that there are now no rules.

@Gargron Suit yourself. You can make any claim you want, but if it's a lie or half truth or requires a legal interpretation to be correct it could backfire.

    1. Twitter’s Custom Emojis Make Their Debut As An Ad Unit With #ShareACoke
      By <a href="/author/drew-olanoff/" title="Posts by Drew Olanoff" onclick="s_objectID='river_author';" rel="author">Drew Olanoff</a> from TechCrunch

A few months ago, I wondered out loud if Twitter was missing the boat by not charging for its custom emojis. I mean, brands want to spend money on ads. I bet they’re salivating over having their own custom emoji on the platform. Wonder no more. Coke has gotten its own custom emoji (previously called hashflags), the company shared with me last night.

Until now, Twitter has only introduced these custom emojis for special events, and most recently to promote the upcoming “Star Wars” movie and the VMAs. That wasn’t part of an ad deal or bigger partnership like this, though.

I spoke with Ross Hoffman, senior director of global brand strategy at Twitter about the possibilities for what I’m calling the “Cashmoji.” (AdMoji is a good one, too!)

TC: Whose idea was it for the emoji/hashtag campaign?

RH: Coca-Cola is a massive global partner of Twitter and they have been pushing us for some time on building a custom emoji (along with the creative agency of W+K). We know that people love using emojis and usage has been significantly increasing over time on our platform. This was a perfect opportunity to work with a nimble and smart marketer to make this happen.

TC: How did the two companies collaborate on its creation?

RH: Twitter’s Brand Strategy team, Coca-Cola and W+K worked together on design, creation and strategy on launching this the emoji around the world. We have been working with Coca-Cola for years and this muscle memory in terms of relationships, brand positioning and KPIs allows us to move quickly on something of this scale.

TC: Is this considered as an “ad unit”, meaning is Coke paying for this?

RH: Part of our global alignment with Coca-Cola includes access to resources and first to market offerings and in this case, a custom emoji.

TC: Are you planning on turning this into an ad product or offering it to others after this trial?

RH: One of our core values at Twitter is #ShipIt. We want to test things and Coca-Cola was the right partner to test with here. We have established trust over the years and we are excited about the learnings we will get from this initiative. The data we get back will help determine the future on what we do with this as a product.

TC: What metric of success, other than total tweets, are you looking for here?

RH: We can’t speak for what Coca-Cola key metrics are, but what we generally think about for large campaigns like this are engagement, sentiment, adoption of the hashtag/emoji and total reach.

      ———-

While Twitter wouldn’t share how much they were making off of this deal, it’s a pretty unique possibility for advertisers. I mean, who wouldn’t want their own custom emoji? It’s a hip ad unit. Where’s the custom Starbucks one for my mornings?

Emojis have become a fun part of the Twitter experience, mostly because you only have 140 characters to express yourself, so the more you can say with less the better. Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Clippers recruited one of its free agents on Twitter in probably the best use of emojis ever:

      ✈️🚁🚙

      — Blake Griffin (@blakegriffin32) July 8, 2015

However, let’s hope this doesn’t end up like Myspace’s selling off of extra top friends spots as ad units, which was the service’s last hurrah for many.

Should probably make it a widget and put it in the channel pdl. Can't believe I missed that one.

This is done - so you can remove it in the pdl now and it is collapsed by default. Since it is a widget, it is easy to relocate to any page region. I'll leave the theming to those more suited to theming.

We did a lot of work on mod_display 2-3 weeks ago, most of it related to situations just like this - empty pages for content that we know exists and is publicly viewable. You should see a noticeable improvement in the next release.

Even with a properly-formed spec I think we'd still be having mastodon-related issues, but that's my inner cynic speaking.

@maiyannah Implementing ActivityPub was easy. I did that a month ago. Trying to figure out what Mastodon is doing with the data we send has consumed the last month and will probably consume the next six. The last 3 weeks everything we sent (legal ActivityPub) vanished into the bit bucket. I've only recently seen data arrive intact at the destination and can start working through the other platform quirks. I've told people time and time again that federation isn't about protocols. It's about projects and all their quirky policies that aren't written anywhere but are critical to working communication.
