    @sim In a dozen generations, researchers bred hamsters that were basically supine stuffed toys, and pathologically vicious little murderers.

    Also, anecdotally, as a farmer, I can report that a large amount is certainly heritable. It may be possible to rouse a little risk orientation in a population in which it had been substantially bred out, but it would be hard.

    @sim Psychological studies in animals show that temperament is highly heritable, so there's every reason to believe that it could work in humans.

    @sim As long as you have women who will breed with those men, you have a problem, because they're more inclined to procreate.

    @sim

    Well, it's all right. That sort of thing will be bred out of the strain when women look around and realise that those aren't the men that they want to settle for.

    @sim The moment that you open the door to some risks, you entertain those that willingly take risks. This is manifestly a bad thing. One wants a nation - nay, a world - of the healthy and wise. Risky behaviour is therefore a problem that should be avoided at every opportunity, if not positively stamped out.

    The inevitable few deviants who can't live in such a world - well, we can do without them. And their punishment can be to make up for their social costs.

    @sim OK, fine, then criminalise those risks. Drunkenness? Six month's community service. Smoking? $200 per pack. Fornication? We could bring back the stocks.

    @sim No risks.

    What's the point? What does taking those risks get you? Or society? Nothing whatsoever. In fact, the costs to society of risks are too high, and they should be banned.

    Sure. Stop the risks. Sublimate the urges. No real downside, is there?

    @sim Ask biology? Higher testosterone levels induce riskier behaviour.

    This is nothing new. Actuaries have known about it for ages, referring to the elevated mortality of young men over women as the "testosterone hump" in the curve.

    @sim

    A better analysis might be around the idea that risk aversion is being hammered into boys, with threat of dire punishments and various forms of "awareness", when the normal male hormonal profile lends itself to risky behaviour. So maybe what the author is really bemoaning is what is perceived as a nation of nervous nellies in masculine form?

    @sim Well, there may be something to that. "No boozing or smoking, they are bad for you. Oh, and fornication isn't sinful, but opens you to all sorts of legal and medical problems as well, not to mention social. So don't do it."

    I don't accept the solipsistic explanation, but I am open to the idea that aggressive moralism could be a problem.

    @sim Especially these days, when the line around journalism is so fuzzy.

    Some support in this for the Trumpian idea of holding the media to account for their nonsense, but not in any harmful way.

    Perhaps we need annotated news stories.

    @sim I'm fully in favour of free speech, to a point that many call me an absolutist (not true).

    But it would be interesting if we held them responsible for talking crap. Maybe a sort of dunce's cap or something.

    @sim Sounds as if what we need is some sort of sorting.

    Get the neanderthals and their camp followers into one area (is Liverpool really being used for anything important these days?) and all the evolved creatures everywhere else.

    Should keep everyone happy.
