@kai Note: I am still learning about all of this and the technical details on how funding + college majors work. I might still go for some sort of Liberal Arts track with an emphasis in Philosophy or something. There is something like this I think. It might side-step some of the government funding rules to not take too many classes outside of your declared major. I wouldn't get as deep into particular topics though, but it might give me tremendous flexibility to explore ideas.

@kai I may just switch over to Liberal Arts somehow, if I can double major in Liberal Arts and Philosophy. I like this idea to kind of side step the funding. It might be a hack of some sort.

@kai My idea is a double-major in Philosophy and Mathematics, along with a minor in something like Classical Languages. You can do this, a double major or double degree path. And yeah Liberal Arts is an option, but the career paths for Liberal Arts and Philosophy can be tough I've been told, likely due to STEM marketing and industries obsession with it. Ramblings..., don't know.

@kai That being said, there are still great programs all over the place in the university setting, you just have to be creative as to how you go about it via the funding that is available. The career and economic side of attending college/university is a valid concern. I don't know what the full answer is though. Sure leadership and government can have a huge impact on this, but so can the overall economic structure of industry and society. Don't know. Just my ramblings right now.

@kai I can see how much social, technological, and economic progress may be lacking due to the political landscape of publishing in academia as well.

Our minds can form weird associations kind of like synesthesia. I don't know.

I don't know why I have this association. It's totally odd.

@kai I do feel that the university system in the U.S. is in dire need for improvement. Important programs seem to be heavily underfunded, and people are encouraged to go through a four year degree with the hope of gaining a career with that degree afterwards. The way the Pell Grant works in the U.S. you musn't take too many classes outside of your declared major. STEM is heavily encouraged. People lose out on much philosophy and great foundations for innovative thought.

@kai Sometimes I feel that technological progress is actually a step back from what really matters.

@kai But, first of all, I wonder if we should primarily measure our progress via technological advancements? Is this really a good measure for society? It kind of reminds me of metrics like GDP, where we measure the "productivity" of industry, yet we forget to include environmental issues, among other things.
