@methoddan I follow a number of YouTubers who make a living from making stuff (e.g. Jimmy DiResta, "I Like To Make Stuff", Alec Steele, etc). Many of them went to #makerscentral last year and have gone this year, even though they are USA-based. It seems to be a place to go to meet your favourite "celebrity" maker judging from last year's reports. The rumour is that this is the last one though. That's pretty much all I know of it.
@maiyannah@clacke This and similar stuff makes me want to vomit. A bank I use confirms payment of my credit card bill with "Nice one" for example, as does giffgaff, my phone network provider when I pay. Repulsive.
@clacke Yes, it seems to be the equivalent of filling the feed with glue to prevent ease of use and maintenance. I wrote to Patreon to complain and "A member of our Community Happiness team will reach out with a response". Orwellian or what?
@clacke I think the likes of AntennaPod and gPodder take a more defensive stance, whereas bashpodder (and my rewrite of it, which I use all the time) is more trusting and *much* simpler. I noticed that gPodder for instance seems to name files using the item title from the feed. I guess I'll have to do something similar because this type of nonsense is becoming more common.
Further to Patreon's RSS feed changes, I just noticed that they changed all the guid values too. Many podcatchers use this and the URL to determine if an episode has already been seen. Looks like mine downloaded everything in the feeds last night, all overwriting the one file '1.mp3'.
@Jason_Dodd Aaargh! I learnt in my early days of #hpr-ing that a recording is a precious thing and needs to be copied asap. Long ago I did a bunch of interviews of some of the members of RTO (Really Terrible Orchestra - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Really_Terrible_Orchestra) which I then lost - somehow. They were probably really terrible interviews but they unfortunately disappeared.
I subscribe to two podcasts on Patreon and get a special feed from them for each. Originally the enclosures contained URLs with hex string file names. Recently they changed to everything being called 1.mp3 with a bunch of parameters following the name. I run a Bashpodder derivative and it happily strips the parameters making everything '1.mp3'. This is very very inconvenient!! Why Patreon??
@fribbledom At the job I started in 1981 at a university in Edinburgh we had a Burroughs mainframe. The offices in our new building were supplied with metal trunking with two of these connected to it. They were for the Burroughs TD800 terminals some of us had. The ports had to have a jumper cable across them when not in use, and if anyone turned off their terminal everyone "downstream" lost connection. I still have a box of the BNC 'T' connectors in my house that my kids used to play with.
@matera Yes, I can just imagine that. My cat is constantly watching insects and spiders, though not attacking them. She brings in the mice and birds though, and that's probably where this one came from - I assume it was a "present" she left for me that I didn't notice.
Today's problem is to find and get rid of the mouse that appeared from under the bookcase last night. The cat was showing interest in the area for a while, but neither of us managed to get it. Oh the joys of cat ownership! π±
@timttmy@theru I was thinking about that. Mine's a changeable reservation and I wondered if any promo code could be added on (subtracted more like) after the event. Guess we wait and see.
@theru@timttmy I have booked a room at the venue hotel. Not the cheapest, but not too bad. It's about a 6-minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly. Ken Fallon will be at OggCamp too this year
@paul Too true. I like my cat to be in at night because she's small and gets picked on by the big cats, so I trained her to come back when I blow a dog whistle. I also give her treats at 9pm daily and she knows what time it is and is usually there waiting. The whole thing works amazingly well!
