New rule: Don't buy it if it doesn't have mainline support in Linux or BSD kernels and an unlockable bootloader.

Ive been following the later more or less but the former is pretty damn important too.

This Nexus Player thing would be a whole other matter if I could put a proper OS on it.

Has anyone used the utility 'ptx' before? I've been going through coreutils to find things I didn't know and this is one of them. I'm not even really sure what it's for. Can anyone shed any light?

Oh, hey #BayArea folks, you should nominate your favorite #cyclist for Bike Commuter of the Year: https://youcanbikethere.com/bike-commuter-of-the-year/

Each of the nine counties get a winner, and they get interviewed and written about, so at the very least you make your friends internet famous with the wonkiest crowd around! ^_^

@maiki I got my start with software hacking and coding when I accidentally deleted our dos computer's autoexec.bat. A friend of the family had set up the machine for us with a startup menu to dummy proof dos. We were clueless how to work it ourselves. My mom promptly drove me to the library and calmly explained that it was OK and id just learn how to fix the computer.

We are creating a world with no room for that narrative now.

Ah, maybe the reason I focus so much of my work on communication is because I know the least about it.

@satchmoz File that under #hiddencosts, ne? It bums me out to think kids will grow up thinking it is "normal" to register an account with a corporation in order to use "consumer electronics".

BTW, this happened to me with a Fire Kindle, I thought I could scrub it clean, make a neat little tablet for C, but it is also heavily built around thier specific OS changes.

    Blah! ^_^

@maiki I hit more issues with basic app compatability when I wrote that, which make me concerned I think I might take a whole other approach.

There are a lot of assumptions built into the AndroidTV platform that take a google account for granted, more so than even any proprietary phone ive touched lately.

I may just pair a bluetooth controller to it and load retroarch on it for a rainy day though.

@satchmoz That's a great idea! If I need a number, I am definitely leaning on SDF for that. ^_^

@satchmoz Coming at this from a problem-solving angle where the goal is to use that device *usable* and *better for people*, have you considered doing a light #OpenGApps build? They have two called pico and nano that have very few inclusions, but just enough creepy so a device won't complain. Some notes: https://interi.org/notes/gapps-in-lineageos/

@gemlog I like a tablet for a couple of things, like quickly reading feeds or selecting music, it feels like the thing to do with a touchscreen. But most of the time I just have a laptop nearby. It's pretty great! ^_^

I am going to get a dedicated media player, gonna splurge eventually (!$250), so I can really focus on listening to music, it improves my quality of life.

So eventually no touch devices around me! I am doing it! Living the dream! ^_^

@kensanata @tomasino Hey, that is really cool! Should that replace the #phlog list on #SDF?

Oh snap, did they just casually #discourse into a pathway for S3-compataible storage in Discourse?

OMG, why didn't I think of this before?! I am a web security professional, I am obligated to document all suspicious activity as a warning to others! Maybe then my credit union will take this seriously.

My credit union has a marketing newsletter, but the unsub link is insecure and some weird URL, so I won't click it.

I suppose the next step is to call them and report this suspicious behavior...

@Greg Huh, yeah, never liked that term. I wanted to ping the editor that put it there, in case it has merit, so we can edit the other page. I'll figure it out. ^_^

@Greg Huh, I've rarely had to change anything like a claim on Wikipedia. Is there a clever way to find the revision that added that entry? I'll manually track it down, but that isn't preferred. ^_^
