I keep hearing about "10 ex" engineers and here I'm just a "1 ed" engineer.

1) invoke ed:

　$ ed book.txt

2) enter append mode

　a

3) write your book

4) enter a period alone on the line

　.

5) write your book out to disk

　w

6) quit and celebrate your new novel

　q

[note, step 3 will be the most difficult]
