Mixed feelings on this post. It gets ranty on things I agree with and encourages software developers to think about the impact of their creations. But, I feel like it overstates the impact and importance of software. It is important to understand it, but it isn't worth puffing up your ego over. — https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2018/01/12/birdcage-liners/

Uhg, reacting without thinking to make a bad situation worse. I guess that's "business logic" instead of trying to bring people together to solve problems like "government logic."\n\nLost in court: A visit to Trump’s immigration bedlam\nhttps://www.texastribune.org/2018/01/19/lost-court-visit-trumps-immigration-bedlam/

Hmm, almost have the IFTTT bridge to Newsblur working. Spacing is still funky.

I really don't understand how the R's can even say these things with a straight face, they control both houses of the legislature and the executive branch. It seems completely made up. On brink of government shutdown, blame game begins. But will it matter? https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2018/01/19/brink-government-shutdown-blame-game-begins-will-matter

Getting happy with the knot board that I'm planning on laser cutting.
My first laser cut, so if anyone has experience with that I'd love feedback. Planning on giving it a gift to cub scout den leaders, so I'd like to be nice.

@Gargron I was thinking about the modal, one frame, just because people wouldn't switch windows to their mail.

@TechieInAK ah, yeah, HW devices are hard and HW manufacturers don't help. That was one of the downfalls of the phone, not enough support from SoC vendors.

@Gargron I did the tutorial when I created my account, though most of the material I knew from reading about Mastodon before joining.
Personally I think that a welcome message with directions on where to look for help is probably the most sensible.

@tinker I'm really enjoying "Democracy in Chains" right now, may cause road rage though.

@copacetic I think so. Better choice of default packages. Also, I am rather excited about the shift to confinement be default with Ubuntu core.

Cool to see there is a Slack Snap that is actually maintained by the Slack team. The key to moving forward is getting upstream teams maintaining their own packages.

Howdy Mastodon!
Engineer working for Axiom.co. Previously I worked on Ubuntu Phone and doing multimedia/TV, almost all consumer electronics.
An Open Source advocate and Ubuntu member. Was a co-founder for Inkscape and now serve on its board.
I think that one mistake I made with my Twitter account was making it all technical, expect this to have more politics and other stuff.

@tinker you might also consider writing more. Might be a good way to investigate small topics/subject without tackling everything at once. Also, could lead to contacts for the next era of your life.

@tinker @tinker would you consider gov't infosec an option? Seems like it might have the work-life balance you're looking for.

Generally learning about and how to use Mastodon. I think the first thing that strikes me as odd is that when you follow someone their backfeed doesn't fill up your timeline.
