@ShionKeys This is not a good sign, since dns blocking/poisoning is one of the top things which bad governments do to try to keep people in the dark about important events.
In which jurisdiction are you located, if you don't mind my asking?
@nolan The sad reality is that despite the PR spin Google has probably always been evil. It has just become more overt in recent years. There's also a Wikileaks book along those lines. Microsoft definitely always was, and wasn't very appologetic about it. Gates and Ballmer had a much more "in your face" attitude about their unethical behavior.
So, "decentralized" identities, where the user is encouraged not to concern themselves about the plumbing and where they just insert a one-liner into their website and then a company handles that boring public key ledger stuff.
This is all fine, except for one teensy-weensy problemette. It ain't decentralized.
You're still beholden to some company for the whole thing to work. And it's worse than that because now some company knows when you log in, and from where and suddenly you've come down with a nasty dose of surveillance capital again.
I don't know what sort of demographic the remaining users of Google+ are. Maybe people working at Google and their families? This might be yet another influx into the fediverse.
@cwebber@Technowix Another example I've encountered recently are "smart meters".
Electricity meters are incredibly basic analog electronics which can and does last for decades. The new mandatory digital "smart meters" seem designed for obsolescence and to have a short life cycle with a surveillance capital type of business model.
@bigl0af I'm not really sure about solid. If this new company is backed by venture capital then an exit has already been agreed and the users have been sold before the game begins. Also I've heard a lot of bad stuff about json-LD - that it's maybe impossible to fully specify or validate.
