@StuC @iona It could happen, but celebrities in the fediverse won't be able to get the same reach as in a centralized system. There would also be nothing defending them from criticism, parody or impersonation. It would be harder for them to control their brand. -

@codesections @JordiGH Similar to the original Mastodon wave in 2017. Most of the tech journalist articles were negative or just badly researched but that didn't stop many new users from joining. -

@iona It's not just you. I also don't like celebs, and the reason is that celebrity creates fake community without reciprocity. It encourages people to develop fake personas different from their real selves and also for followers to have unrealistic expectations beyond the capabilities of any mortal. There have also been plenty of cases where celebrities abuse their status, mistreat people and get away with it. -

Never underestimate the amount of ignorance about the internet which exists out there. And here I'm not just thinking of Jane/Joe Average but major companies with lots of money to spend on infosec who have jaw-droppingly laughable bugs in their websites.
