@neauoire There is also an audiobook (radioplay?) version on the archive for free which is really amazingly done and has a fullcast of actors. It definitely helped me understand what on earth was going on. I think it was done by an irish radio station.

@neauoire Well just remember don't listen to what anyone says about it. Also, don't expect to get everything, it isn't a mystery novel where missing a detail could mean the difference between getting it and not getting it. The book will likely challenge the way you read, but I think that is a wonderful thing, not a knock against it. Also don't listen to a damn word anyone says about it.

@neauoire This is one of the reasons Ulysses is such a good book. The book begins with an obnoxiously intellectual young man who despite Knowing Everything is insufferable and miserable. The book eventually shifts to an older guy who is kind of a pushover and isn't a genius but is curious and happy and ultimately the person you would want to be. It makes it all the better that the first character is just the author making fun of his younger self.

@lesschinski
I am not really that knowledgable about this but I seem to have really liked all the No Starch Press stuff I have read. They seem to have one for R, but I am not sure how good that one is specifically. Sorry if that isn't that helpful.

@lanodan Dude do you even know about international hacker spies? They are always on the run so they gotta hack in airports. Don't disturb them they are probably pretty dangerous.

@raucao @nolan I agree that giving hundreds of people on your instance the power to block and suspend any account they like is a bad idea. However what if it was that hundreds of people had the power to vote on their opinion of a report/block? I realize that this would be a huge amount of work to build and at this point I am basically envisioning a different network, but if moderation is such a massive issue why not? At least a voting system is a solvable problem. Unlike moderation.

@raucao @nolan right right, I meant more that why is moderation a job that only a small handful of people should be doing for an instance?

@nolan I do wonder why from a design philosophy standpoint that admins (and not the longterm users of an instance) have to take all the burden of moderating themselves though? Not that any alternative wouldn't take a lot of work to build.

@nolan
We are definitely in the wild west right of federated social networks right now. I think moderation is going to be a significant part of running an instance, and that maybe won't work for a lot of people/instances longterm. That is why it is important that there are a lot of people trying different strategies. -

Your job as an artist isn't to interpret what you make for an audience. You aren't performing some clever magic trick to wow others with your technique. You aren't an expert house builder who knows just how to cut and join each board. Your job is to bore a gaping hole through your defenses and give an audience the terrifying power of thinking whatever they may about the most intimate parts of you. If you can do that nothing else matters.

@some_qualia I good naturedly disagree. I think an author should lay out a set of fantastical machines they have collected and let me decide which one to pick up and put in my pocket. I can tell when an author is trying to sell me a particular one and I don't like it. To each their own though!

@some_qualia If it is self-indulgent to get lost in a fantasy world and feel wonder for reasons other than plot than I am happily doing everything wrong when I read!

We may not live forever but we can taste eternity. A walk along a deserted beach is a tea strongly steeped in it.
