Taking a step back. this is situation is a perfect argument that instance centralization is a massive issue that is as fundamental to federated social networks as code. One block from one instance to another should not have huge implications.

It has become acceptable to bash facebook's adverse impact on democracy.
But there is an elephant in the room: the impact of social media on the entire economy. Facebook's algorithms control the fate of millions of micro-entrepreneurs and SME's. If you don't show up on Google's first page you don't exist. Linkedin knows more about corporate structures than corporates themselves.
We don't live anymore on "market based democracies", but platform driven digital oligarchies.

for example, the whole atheme IRC platform was created explicitly to provide an ethically-designed IRC stack that wasn't too hard to deploy.
the inspircd author got upset when atheme adopted features when used in tandem with inspircd that defeated unethical spying functionality, and didn't understand why ethical design was crucial.
there were numerous interactions of that type with various ircd authors, who used various excuses to justify these types of abusive features.
now i see the same defensive posture being used by various players in the whole fediverse game, who simply have not considered the ethical consequences of their work on specific features.
maybe, someday, we will get to the point where ethics and responsibility are equally balanced with inertia. that's what the #forkoff crowd really wants, incidentally. -

@dirtycommo @LinuxSocist this all heavily reminds me of the themes of the book "Against The Day" by Thomas Pynchon. It deals with the continual liberating promise of new technology being corrupted by the status quo before it can take off. It is set in the early 1900s when airships were thought to be the future, and since the airship is passed over for the airplane the airship becomes this mythical technology that escapes this process of corruption.

@bob My favorite artificial scarcity is when only two or three ebook copies of the same book can be taken out at a time on digital libraries. What a farce.

I heard that some physicists calculated that on the moon with the reduced gravity and general rock composition, lava tubes of up to half a mile wide or so could be stable. Maybe I will just find one of those and build my supervillain base there.

@walruslifestyle @Antanicus @Shufei Oh my gosh, I am terrified by my own stupid argument here, it makes to much sense. If a group of people all agreed to start eating eachother, only very ocassionally, and each person was chosen by genuinely random lottery that would be a win win for almost everybody. It would be even more eco-friendly and ethical than not eating meat at all.... Am I a superhero movie villain now?

@walruslifestyle @Antanicus @Shufei true but people are the most ethical meat, so long as they are selected by lottery

@Antanicus @walruslifestyle @Shufei I risk getting attacked here, because people frequently attack me about it but I see soylent type nutritionally complete foods as playing a potentially important role for replacing fast food and impulse meat eating. Being able to eat a relatively good tasting vegan shake on quick notice (for relatively cheap) is huge for someone like me who isn't that interested in cooking (tho I respect that good cooking is awesome)
