    @lain In the US, "Oriental" was the accepted term for a person whose ancestry is from eastern Asia until sometime in the 1990s. The word means "from the East", so it makes sense.

    @lain I honestly think that some of that is inevitable when we have so many people joining. But I think some of the most contentious folks are eventually going to go back to #Twitter and #Facebook (and a few will leave for a #P2P network, such as #Twister), while grumbling that the #Fediverse is "full of hypocrites".

    The subject field was implemented, but AFAIR, it did not propagate to other instances. I don't know whether it was a plugin or a switch, but I do recall turning it off on an earlier #Federati instance because it only displayed on the posting instance.

    As for "Private" posts, GS used to have a private post mode (using advisory privacy) ... but it was removed because people thought it was really private, but it was leaky at best. And yes, the private posts were federated across #OStatus.

    When I hear about all the "new" halfway-working things in #ActivityPub, almost all of them were tried and discarded in #StatusNet / #GNU_Social before #Mastodon existed.

    I used to have a Subject field activated in GNU Social, but that didn't seem to propagate to other instances, so I deactivated it. I should reactivate it and see whether other Fediverse software can see it. (IOW: Does GS not send or receive that field, or does it just not receive it?)

    Ah, finally, I can see the site. I'm not a fan of low-contrast dark themes. (I suddenly remembered that there's a light theme [read "light" as "visible"] available and switched.)

    The thing about government documents asking for your race is this: a lot of us recognize that this could help enable discrimination, but on the other hand, a lot of our nation's anti-discrimination efforts depend on demographic statistics gathered through those same questions.

    Personally, I leave it blank or choose "decline to state".
