also please watch One Punch Man, it does a little bit of the whole "are super heroes actually good?" thing too and it's fantastic

i also watched and liked The Defenders but it didn't feel quite right, especially with the Iron Fist. i despise him. i'm interested in checking out daredevil someday but i will not touch anything to do with the Iron Fist

waiting for the next season when maybe, just maybe, we'll get a story that doesn't revolve around that cliche asshole

i highly recommend:
- jessica jones
- luke cage
- captain america's modern stuff, strangely enough. more action than the other two but still decent

honestly it's hard to call jessica jones a definite good person, but she is so realistic and so relatable that her story is far more interesting than the majority of superhero drivel that exists.

we forget that heroes are still more or less human, and anything to do with jessica jones has been great at portraying that.

her MINOR mistakes are the ones that get her into trouble. she's so busy wrestling with her morals over something as dangerous as superpowers, that it's actually distracting her from her truly harmful behaviour; isolating herself and being shitty to her friends.

this causes her friends to push back or to find ways to cope with her behaviour. or destroy themselves trying to save her. and in the end they usually backstab her, making her more fearful and isolated and feeding into a large loop.

she holds herself accountable for all her own major mistakes surrounding her powers even if there's only a slight chance she did something wrong. she beats herself up over it and isolates herself to protect those around her.

but she doesn't realise she's actually hurting the people around her by being so prickly toward them. she doesn't realise that her powers aren't why people are upset with her and eventually walk away.

but she's constantly being backstabbed and it's hard for her.

she wrestles her morals and is constantly assessing her own behaviour, afraid to let people get too close in case she hurts them like others have hurt her.

she is unsure of the right way to use her powers and would rather avoid the circumstances altogether so she doesn't risk making the wrong decision and getting someone hurt. unlike other superheroes who always insist they're right, always have this ego about them, and putting their morals above all.

i like jessica jones for this kind of stuff. she's not really a classic superhero that tries to do the right thing and has the government giving her assignments to take down supervillains. instead she's a person that happens to have super powers, just trying to live her life in spite of all the absurd shenanigans going down around her.

she's been hurt by her past, she's been hurt by other people with powers, and she's hella prickly but unsure of where to draw the line on "losing control"

we look at superheroes as some sorts of perfect entities fighting for justice out of the goodness of their hearts, but not often enough do we stop to think about how power corrupts, how the mental health of a superhero would be affected by how they live, and how their close friends and family might react to their behaviour.

we also don't really think about how the concept of "justice" isn't very concrete either, and superheroes are often forced to decide what they feel is right for themselves

so like, a realistic portrayal of someone with a lot of power being idolised, given fame and fortune, and allowed to be an asshole and do whatever the hell they want if it means JusticeTM

tbh superhero movies are better when the superheroes are made out to be morally grey stuck-up assholes that fight with their colleagues, making a shit ton of mistakes, and 90% of the time only doing the right thing by accident

had some sort of dream that i was in the harry potter universe for the second coming of voldemort. wands also doubled as lightsabers somehow, and voldemort was now a sith lord on top of everything else?
