hey i'm super pissed at ontario right now. as if i wasn't already. but more than i expected to be in the short term

well this is straight up a mess

@lizardsquid voyager showcases a definite issue with rank and the conclusion that janeway is "voyager's mommy" in a way is both good and bad. she cares about her crew but to the point where she thinks she can often decide things for them because she "knows better", treating them as infants under her care.

the only time she gives them input is when she herself is fine with both outcomes and/or is unsure

hi i'm salty that i ran out of good star trek to watch and now i have to have everyone tell me that picard is "good actually," while i trudge through TNG

tbh captains were a bad idea. rank was a bad idea. the only behaviour that ever seems any bit good from a captain is when they avoid protocol and give their subordinates freedom and autonomy.

the rest is authoritarian garbage where certain special folks get to make decisions that override the wants and needs of other grown ass adults without proper input /consensus/compromise

i still don't know what to make of kirk other than 🙄 but i've only seen 2 episodes of ToS so maybe i'm missing something. he just has very little personality from what i've seen?

he's also pretty shitty to jake which makes me uncomfortable with glorifying him but he's definitely better at his job than other captains

and sisko basically pretends to be picard to keep his job, while smiling through his teeth and giving his crew permission to pretty much disobey his direct orders if they feel it's necessary, because he trusts them

he's still pretty bossy and mean at times but it feels like that's largely due to being under a lot of pressure, and he seems to give his crew a lot more freedom to do as they see fit compared to any other captain

janeway pretends she doesn't like pulling rank but will absolutely do so at the first sign of disagreement (even treating it as a joke sometimes to normalise it)

she doesn't always play by the rules but she'll suddenly bring them up when it'll win her an argument, and still dishes out punishment like candy when her crew decides to operate of their own will

picard is bossy as hell, extremely strict, basically operates on fear and power. his way is generally the only way. he can afford to play by the rules because they were made by/for him and people like him.

sisko seemed like he was constantly forced into the impossible situations other people didn't want to deal with, that he especially didn't want to deal with, and somehow ended up coming to a lot of great solutions thanks in part to his own unfortunate experiences.

he's hugely empathetic toward his crew and doesn't care too much for protocol because he's tired of others treating him like a puppet and doesn't want his crew to feel the same

captain janeway seems like she got her job through having influential parents that wanted to give her the world, though she actually turns out to be a pretty decently selfless and kind individual despite her stubbornness to admit fault and her occasional problem with pulling rank to meet her own goals

picard is extremely overrated and not a very good captain honestly. literally watching the show makes me feel like he got his job through privilege giving him a foot in the door

okay, i certainly don't "need" more space, but i've already had to start installing things on the slow hdd that could use the speed of something a little faster

honestly i probably need to get like...a 4tb 7200rpm hdd at some point in the future. at the very least i haven't exceeded the 2tb drive yet, and i've been doing a lot of things with it i really don't need to, like archiving tens of gigs of tv shows.

would be nice to be able to retire the 2tb drive for backups of the OS drive and such

how do i already need more flash storage this is absurd.
