i'm very rapidly starting to despise discovery for being a huge disappointment, even if it's a halfway decent show outside of my expectations of what a star trek should be like

but the ship design is extremely good. that show is eye candy. could use less lens flares though, and a lot less light considering...well...space

if i ever end up getting any star trek models, i think i'd most want to go for the delta flyer, the defiant, and discovery

voyager and ds9 would be cool too but i'm not as huge on their designs as i am the aforementioned starships

only 3 more episodes of voyager to go, and one of them is double-length

i can't wait to finally finish it and know how it ends but i'm also not looking forward to finishing ti because then i won't have any more voyager to watch!!!

@monorail the same program as the EMH is used for cleaning and maintaining garbage scows, mining ore by hand, etc

in an episode in the final season, a dozen EMH are seen mining ore while a couple converse exactly as the doctor would, suggesting that they have similar programming, and a similar ability to learn and adapt and become more humanlike over time.

idk, it just seems super silly that anyone would go out of their way to create something complex and nuanced like a human-adjacent hologram and then force it to do menial labour (or anything for that matter) when you could just as easily use a hologram or machinery that doesn't experience the negative stuff, and won't be upset by their treatment and/or working conditions

in fact, if you're going and designing holograms in the first place, you could probably create a bunch of prototypes, figure out which ones like which jobs, and then encourage them to take up those positions of their own will.

if they say no, keep designing these autonomous holograms until you find one willing to take the job. otherwise, if the human-like aspects aren't necessary, don't implement them unless you want to get into a debate over the rights of holograms

i'd imagine that cleaners would be pretty easily replaced with automation, and some aspects of engineering too. though i bet there'd still be some folks who like cleaning themselves, and plenty of folks who would love to be engineers, even just to do maintenance on garbage scows.

i don't think you'd need to make human-like holograms and then force them to do a job against their wishes.

    but miners, cleaners, engineers?

the former can easily just be robots or holograms with rudimentary nonhuman forms (if using physical robotics wouldn't be ideal). naturally, holograms are a little more durable than organics or machinery, but you don't need to have them be anything like humans nor do you need them to feel and react to their work conditions in human ways.

a doctor makes sense because those with medical concerns might have difficulty trusting a machine, especially if they're in distress. interacting with patients is half the battle for a doctor; trying to win their trust and get to know them on a slightly personal level to make better judgements on what kind of care they need. the human form and programming help immensely with that

anyone else find it fucked up that some of the automation in the star trek universe is done by holograms that look and act humans and experience the work they're doing in similar ways to humans?

like, there are very few jobs where that kind of automation would be needed. simply programming something to do the job it was designed for rather than giving it complex human-like programming would've sufficed. and they didn't have to be made in our image.

@hi_cial pride should be about coming together over how different we all are. a celebration of differences. idk what's more in the spirit of pride than going however you feel the most comfortable, even if that's in Yeen Clothes

it was incredibly tranquil until i was suddenly being dragged away from the bench i was sitting on by an Agent Smith looking guy and his partner, talking about how he felt lucky to have finally caught up with me and can't wait to exact my punishment, which i "totally deserved" for my crimes

thankfully the area under the awning was very open and free of clutter, so the smoke from the other folks standing around was cascading right out of the standing area and off the property into nearby greenery. that combined with the exhaust from the cars and the light drizzle of rain made for quite an atmospheric sight in the semi-cloudy early morning light.

soon i was done with whatever i hoped to accomplish in the building and headed outside for a vape. was incredibly nervous vaping right beside a gas station for some reason, even though i was a fair distance away and surrounded by smokers. i guess the "no smoking" sign on the wall nearby was making me uneasy in relation to the proximity of the gas station. but it was only to prevent smokers from polluting underneath the large concrete awning above me that was protecting me from the rain

as i watched on, a girl came around near me to grab some stuff she had left at a nearby table. i raised an eyebrow at her for drinking gatorade at such a late hour of the night.she thought i was attracted to her (which wasn't wrong, just not what i intended to signal) and gave me a smile as she, her friends, and a very stunningly well groomed shibe headed out of the building

had a dream where i was in some sort of diner/corner store/meeting house type deal and captain kathryn janeway from voyager was sitting at a booth talking to the person that owned/ran the place about possibly joining some resistance group. it seemed she was more reluctant than willing but was still going to give it a shot.

i was sitting around on a bench off to the side, watching everything unfold, hoping i could also get into this resistance group.
