A couple of people from various instances have mentioned that #Mastodon is confusing at first. So I decided to write a comprehensive guide on how to get started with Mastodon.
Hopefully this helps new users to Mastodon. Please do Boost if you feel it could be useful to others.
@kev Very good work! Two tweaks I'd be tempted to make:
- in "The Fediverse", it might be worth noting that you don't have to remember everyone's full @name@instance; folks unfamiliar with Masto might inadvertently see that as a point of friction. Perhaps a screenshot showing the usual autocomplete once you start entering someone's username?
- in "Moderation Tools", perhaps note (AFAIK) that reports are sent to /your/ instance's admin, and /if you choose/, to the remote admin as well.
@Sylvhem Egh, indeed. For so long, I simply put on a t-shirt and leggings (and usually, when outside, jeans). But now, there are so *many* more options to choose from.. ! It's definitely going to take time to gauge what works for me.
@ghost_bird It's one of my favorite easy dishes - so many harmonious flavors, and of course, I can make it to just the heat level I'm wanting that day, whether vivacious or more highly spirited. =:)
Classically, it should include bell peppers to complete the onion/celery/peppers triad, but I don't usually tend to keep bell peppers around, and I've found the dish doesn't really lose out.
"Through efforts around the world, we use new information and communication technologies, especially mobile telephony, to facilitate well-being, community organization and personal and collective autonomy. Our approach combines regulatory activism and reform, development of decentralized telecommunications infrastructure, direct community involvement and participation, and critical engagement with new technologies."
@Jo That does sound like a very good idea, actually. (And I always try to keep a couple good coffees around - single estates or microlots from Union Roasted. Bit more expensive than supermarket stuff, but so easily worth the difference, with all the subtleties per variety, and freshly roasted & dispatched to order)
@ghost_bird It's some (very effective) form of self-upsell: at each stage, that voice is encouraging that "well, if you did /this/ too, it wouldn't be much extra work at all".
See also: only wanting something simple with rice, and leaving with a jumbalaya of chicken, kielbasa, prawns, rice, chickpeas, celery, onion, mushroom, and tomato. (With thyme, sage, cayenne, Sriracha, garlic purée, and smoked hot paprika)
@eve Definitely one of San Francisco's great qualities, too. ^_^ I used to love looking down Taraval, the land gently sloping down, and then, beyond, the wondrous expanse of the Pacific. ^_^ Ah, such a lovely walk, ambling along the beach, occasionally photographing sand patterns or graffiti on the drift breaks..
@ziphi Time to engage in some mail order retail therapy, from somewhere with free returns, so if the fit isn't good, you can just exchange/return without being lumbered with postage again. ^_^
