    In theory, yes, but my motivation to play games isn’t always my own enjoyment. Often I play games because I need a break from whatever else I’m doing (working or worrying for example).

    More rarely I play games just for my own enjoyment, and the games I’m playing for themselves in this context rarely last me long, regardless of their design merits. I usually get bored of a game for itself either when I have figured it out or when I can’t quickly figure it out, so it can’t last too long by definition.

    The games I stick with have a small randomness component so I have to figure out every game session on their own, but also don’t put up too much of a fight so that the difficulty feels linear to me, even over time. Lately, Deep Rock Galactic has been filling this niche spot that Dota 2 had been dominating for the past 7 years.

    You aren't wrong, but game design decision seldom are revolving about how convenient it is for the player, because it directly conflicts with the rentability imperative. Meaning it's often more profitable for a game publisher to exploit players' basest instincts like FOMO than provide a comfortable experience at the player's own pace.

    I found myself dropping off such games that weren't hitting my dopamine button hard enough, so it also is a compromise on my end and why I kept playing timer-based games for so long.

    I finally removed all timer-based games from my phone. I should have done it a long time ago given that being on time to collect deliveries/productions gave me severe FOMO anxiety and I was compulsively checking my phone at all time, but now it’s done.

    Twitter has this new feature where it shows an unescapable login page to anonymous users when they reach the end of a thread including replies, essentially making the “related tweets” section unreachable, and it’s been a great time saver for me.
