@ink_slinger@Corvusheart Fully agree that it would be awesome to be able to do this. It would make it a lot easier to find conversations and people, especially if you aren't on a server with millions of users already (which I think is all of them at this stage).
@Canageek I'm not sure what you mean when you say you've lived through this already. I don't really know what else to say on this either. I didn't mean to offend you. Let's not talk about this topic any more.
@art I really loved my x220 but I have to admit I prefer the new ThinkPad chiclet keyboards as well. They seem speedier, and slightly more comfortable.
I'm presently looking for people to sponsor several features for Mastodon (and Switter)
β’ Giphy Support for the web β¬50 β’ Settings to improve sensitive content display (e.g., only show sensitive content from people you follow or your instance) β’ β¬100 β’ Better Admin UI for moderation β¬50-100 β’ Discover Accounts by Hashtags β¬200 β’ Your Suggestion: β¬β¬β¬ (note, if someone else is already working on it, I won't accept funds)
@Canageek I like how it's more like a massive public space than a club. Social media has the power to seem like a giant hive of human minds, which is fascinating and awful at once.
I think Mastodon's design and implementation help hold the awful bits at bay.
We can always carve out clubs within those larger spaces.
@Canageek Well, it's my very unscientific, anecdotal observation. So take that with a grain of salt. I haven't seen many women here yet, though I have seen a hand-full.
I have noticed quite a number of queer people -- that's totally awesome!
That Mastodon is mostly white people isn't great, though I know it's not because people of colour are being intentionally excluded. Hopefully, that changes soon.
@Canageek I'm okay with the culture changing, as long as it doesn't become a haven for bigots, Nazis, crime, evil Russian bots, etc. You can always find your own subculture within a large ecosystem -- it might even grow to include people you would like to connect with but might not have otherwise met.
I think one advantage to Mastodon growing it's user base would be diversity. I can't tell for sure, but so far it seems to me to be *mostly* (but not exclusively) white and male.
@Canageek I remember eternal September. I was a nerdy kid who loved computers and had AOL at home, thrust into this massive, vibrant, exciting, unreal thing called the Internet.
@Canageek I'll be happy if billions of people start using Mastodon. It will mean a more secure, safe, and civil Internet, particularly if Mastodon displaces Twitter or another major network.
Mastodon's design means that it won't turn into the cesspools that Twitter and Facebook have become.
@ink_slinger@bobjonkmangreen I also think that we should have proportional representation across the country, however, that wouldn't do much for Alberta in the short term, and wouldn't change the present state of things because they are back to two main parties now. Maybe the greens would wind up with one or two seats in a proportional system, but even that seems unrealistic at the moment (maybe it's not -- I don't know enough about their presence in AB to be sure).
It's like the oil battle itself. Many people in Alberta seem to take BC's resistance to more AB pipelines on our own land as some sort of personal attack. We just want to take proper care of our home, and the Earth at large.
@ink_slinger Hm. Well, that I don't know about. So I can't say, though it makes some sense, since the conservative provincial government drew those lines. What makes it harder to buy is the fact that their federal MPs are almost all conservative too, and those districts are drawn by Elections Canada.
In any case, the result is that the ABNDP is probably done after the next provincial election, regardless of whether or not the oil companies get another pipeline. ;)
@ink_slinger The crazy (and somewhat unfortunate) thing is that the ABNDP would likely not be given a second term, no matter what.
Alberta is such a die-hard conservative province, that it appears the conditions to bring progressive government (like concurrent big scandal and vote splitting) will not return for some time.
So I think we can celebrate this pipeline win without qualification when it (hopefully) happens for good. :)
@jd heh. Agreed, though I find the "alt-left" label disturbing. Neoliberal for folks like Hillary was fine. Putting "alt" in front of political words now smacks Nazism to me.
β’ The idea was to build profiles of people that included their medical conditions, information that health systems have, as well as social and economic factors gleaned from Facebook.
β’ Facebook said the project is on hiatus so it can focus on "other important work, including doing a better job of protecting people's data."
@deadsuperhero Fedora KDE spin is fantastic and rock solid -- refined, stable, customisable, and beautiful. I switched to it a few years ago and never looked back.
I run Linux only on my home and work laptops (and on 95% of our servers at work). So I spend a lot of time with the Linux desktop. π
