@jamey I know what you mean about feed subscription. On elementary, between FeedReader, News, & Vocal all the apps use a prompt dialog for feed subscription. And while the FreeDesktop.Org standards have a spec for controlling music players, they don't for FeedReaders.

And that's a problem as without a protocol to bridge between browsers, etc and feed readers we end up with tight-coupling that discourages competition.

@Wolf480pl @rysiek @jerry @Aaron I do kind-of have questions about Matrix. From a distance it kind-of looks like they decided to reimplement XMPP with the latest fashion of JSON. And I still have to explore it's encryption situation.

As for SSB I'm starting to look into it, particularly with Git-SSB. And from what I've seen, the tech looks very elegant when dealing with group comms or reliability despite the clients. Though again I have to look at the encryption again.

I played with Git-SSB today! And I used this peer-to-peer git hosting to begin to think through and describe how I'd implement a peer-to-peer triplestore database.

    I had fun with that!

I've heard plenty about others evangalizing (even if that's not meant to be their job) software tools they say "do everything".

This view really perplexes me as we have software tools that do everything: they're called "programming languages". It doesn't take much to make such a tool. What does take effort is making a tool that actually solves a problem well for people.

I'm surprised this still needs saying, but the difference between FOSS licenses isn't really about how much freedom they grant but who gets that freedom.

e.g. GPL/AGPL focuses on end-user freedom, MIT/BSD focuses on developer freedom, and Apache/MPL tries to find a compromise between the two.

While I don't think choice of license makes all that big of a difference, I'm very much on the side of the end-user so I tend to prefer the GPL.

As for you, I don't care. Just please don't smear.

I'm looking for contracting opportunities, and would like to know if the fediverse has any.

My skills: I am familiar with GTK, the Web, Python, Git, free software in general, and much more. I have a BSc, Computer Science. enjoy efficiently computing answers to problems, as well as designing UIs that are instantly familiar to your users. And if pressed I can do *some* graphic design (e.g. my avatar here/Odysseus's app icon).

    Please DM me if interested.

    And please boost this toot!

@blakehaswell An elevator pitch/vision for federation I often find very useful to communicate with nontechnical people is:

You can use the tools you like, I can use the tools I like, and we can still communicate.

@clacke I wrote a Python script to draw that icon, who's result can be seen at https://alcinnz.github.io/Odysseus/media/2017-07-26/oddysseus-web.svg .

I considered using it for Odysseus's app icon, but it didn't work out. Instead I went for what latter doubled as my avatar here.
