@protestation (Not that material wealth is the be-all-end-all, but it is a choice a lot of people make.) All of us with the resources and leisure time to sit typing our opinions into the Internet should be especially grateful. (2/2)
@protestation Capitalism, or the Free Market system is based on everyone, rich and poor, freely choosing how to use their own property and time. It's not a perfect system, and if there is unfair exploitation or someone assembling a secret police force, then there should be reforms. But the Free Market system is responsible for the greatest explosion of material wealth at all levels of society. (1/2)
Lake Retba in Senegal is a salt lake which is naturally bright pink like strawberry milkshake.
The colour comes from microbes which use a type of photosynthesis which evolved separately to the kind that plants use. The chemical machinery those microbes use is rhodopsin – the same stuff which is found in your retinas, allowing you to see.
@bstacey@Siphonay I've made reference in the past to positive articles on #JordanPeterson; the Patreon post I've boosted has a lengthy set of links to negative articles. So there's balance for those with the inclination to investigate.
I personally express no firm opinion on the man, having neither read his works, nor listened to him (other than that BBC interview).
@Siphonay I'm not even sure if Jordan Peterson is alt-right; I've read positive things about him at slatestarcodex.com and by Wesley Yang. And he is after all a professor at a good university.
My suggestion is that you listen to your friend, try to understand where he or she is coming from, what's the appeal. You don't need either to agree or to disagree with any proposition until you've given it some thought.
"If the good God Himself were not to see my good deeds (which is impossible), I would not be disturbed. I love Him so much that I would want to please Him, without His knowing that it is I who am doing it" (St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus)
Oranges need cold night time temperatures to actually turn orange. When oranges are grown in tropical countries where the weather is always warm, their skin never turns orange, instead staying a leafy green colour even when fully ripe.
A Tree of 40 Fruit is, quite literally, a tree which flowers with 40 types of blossom and produces 40 types of fruit. Specifically, heritage varieties of fruit from the Prunus family, which includes cherries, plums, peaches, and almonds.
There are at least 16 of these trees in the world, grown by New York artist Sam Van Aken.
"an approximately nine-way game of chicken — between Prime Minister Theresa May, the Leave and Remain factions within her Conservative party, the Ulster loyalists in the Democratic Unionist Party (on which the government’s shaky grip on power depends), the leader of the Labour Party, its Leave and Remain factions, and the Speaker of the House. Oh, and the EU"
"Right now the chances of Remain seem to be rising, or perhaps some version of Norway plus, and those are among the better options. I am hardly distraught, noting that I genuinely do not have a strong sense of what will happen next. I am pleased to see that not one of the seven versions of #Brexit could command a majority."
Oh my goodness I've just learned a thing about The Matrix that causes it to make a lot more sense: In the original script the humans were used as neural network compute clusters by the Machines and as a crucial component of The Matrix itself.
Which is why humans who were aware of the simulation could control aspects of The Matrix - their minds were part of its foundation.
Unfortunately the test audiences had trouble understanding this concept so the studio changed the human role to "batteries".
@nigelsezyarr The reason I think a b) wall (no free movement of people) in the sea could be acceptable is that I don't think people would find it unreasonable to show ID at ferry terminals and airports. They probably do the latter already.
