“... but I dream of the internet, of keyboard search phrases that make complete sense in the dream, are the key to the dream’s meaning, but which make no sense in the morning, like all the dreams I have ever had.”

@kingnewbs True, that. Been there, before, too. Knowing is good. Unable to reach? Not so much. There it goes again.

The ceiling fire alarm in the garage is telling me it's time to change the battery. Unfortunately, I don't own a ladder high enough to reach it. My neighbor does, but I'm sure he won't be up for hours yet. Every few minutes, the alarm gives off yet another insistent beep (it surely has been doing that all night). Each time I hear it, I think about other ways to reach the alarm to replace the battery. None of which will work. I know this fact but my brain refuses to stop wondering. #smallstories

    When in a writer's house

    I look for lost words
    scribbled in the nooks
    of walls
    I search for abandoned poems
    tucked into holes
    of rooms
    I ponder upon pens
    and nibs and ink
    and paper

    for I am certain
    of what must be
    left behind

    Edith Wharton's home, though,
    seems scrubbed clean
    by historians
    and restoration experts
    alike,

all paint and sculpture and shine

just another fancy home on the hill
    with not a written word
    to be found.

I love Grant Snider’s Incidental Comics ... this panel from his recent ‘Cures for Boredom’ is a nice companion to the spirit and ethos that I find in our collective #smallstories (http://www.incidentalcomics.com/2018/08/cures-for-boredom.html)

    Inside the hollowed-out
    trunk of tree,
    she huddled, standing
    right in the very spot
    where rings had been;
    its story, indecipherable
    by time and weather:

    a small girl,
    made even younger
    by comparison,
    worries about
    spiders she can't quite
    see.

The world is one built on visual deception. I thought of this last night. I was driving to band practice, listening to Rosanne Cash, when I glanced up. Between the gap of two high hills, the silvery ghost fade of a summer moon hung in the sky. It was stunning, this floating coin stuck in the gap of the land. But it was all trickery. The distance between the moon and the small mountains too far to consider. The road fed me right into the hills, and the moon disappeared. #smallstories

@dogtrax I was gracedwith witnessing a 'salamander migration'. It was
after sunset during a late summer frogstrangler of a rainstorm. I stopped my car in road. In front of me was a vision of salamanders. Hundreds of them in the road. I stopped traffic. Other drivers got out of their vehicles, looked on in amusement as I mosied them along to safety, and then joined in. The headlights, the rain, the laughter, the raucous amazement of adults scooping up salamanders to safety. Alive. #smallstories

@tellio We had window wells in the apartment complex where I grew up in CT and I remember a few salamanders there, too. In the next town over from me now, they built a "salamander crossing" under the road so that during the wet season, the creatures could be protected as they wandered habitats. A local band - Salamander Crossing -- took on the name and was quite popular here for years -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjZz01TS0kM #smallstories response
