well that one was a lot sillier than the other two and that's kind of a high bar to clear

@elsander I am perpetually surprised by how many people think that either Judaism or Christianity ever literally taught 'an old man with a beard in the clouds'

I mean the First Commandment is 'God is not representable in images' so......

It takes more than three thousand years for a very basic religious teaching to sink in, perhaps?

(Okay that ONE TIME in Daniel with the 'Ancient of Days' thing, sheesh)

@capngloval Yeah it's the idea of Burroughs doing noir 1920s corporate pulp that first surprised me then surprised me that I was surprised.

@pnathan The breaking point for me was the Smurfs movie - not Disney but Sony/Columbia, but, the
everyman' protoganist is *literally an advertising executive*

and that's where I knew that Hollywood 'kids' movies had completely lost interest in being for any kids other than the children of the extremely rich.

(A notable counter-example: Aardman Studio's 'Flushed Away' which is especially poignant given the Brexit debacle.)

@pnathan Yeah, I do think the whole "why actually are the lions beloved kings when they literally eat their subjects" needs more exploration. it's probably the reason why I've never really enjoyed this movie.

More and more I feel Disney and other similar animated movies are targeted at a laughably rich upper middle-class demographic - children of corporate executives, etc - for whom this kind of thinking is just "normal". But it seems increasingly weird to the rest of us.

I really wanna understand how 'Refusing the Call' ever became a thing

"Right, so, you've got only 120 minutes to tell our story, what's the very first thing we must do?"

"Grab the audience with some action? Establish our protagonist?"

"Of course not. You want to spend 90 of those minutes watching the protagonist grumble about their boring life and watch paint dry while repeatedly refusing to do anything interesting. That way, the audience will really WANT them to act in the last 30 minutes!"

I wonder at what point all the Hollywood script writing seminars will shift from 'make sure you Refuse the Call while you Save the Cat' to 'just watch every episode of Stranger Things and zero episodes of anything made by J J Abrams and you will know. In your heart. You will know.'
