I'm honestly not convinced the classic Sonic series was actually good like

They want you to go fast but then punish you as soon as you hit top speed so your only recourse is to go really slow until you memorize the entire game, at which point you can go fast but will still run into some spikes at some point because you missed a jump

Sonic Mania is probably my fave old-school Sonic game and that's due in LARGE part to the fact that it's way easier
