In the late 1950's it declared itself "Canada's first weed-free town", courtesy of the local Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops who were dispatched to douse every lawn with 2,4-D... Imagine, dozens of 8-10 year olds with pesticide spray applicators... Of course, 2,4-D was a locally made herbicide, straight from the same plant in the north of town that would be producing Agent Orange a few years later. Today, we get all our water piped in from a neighbouring community, since all Elmira's groundwater is contaminated...
