I downloaded the !icecat v60 .deb file, but I've been reluctant to install it because I think it no longer supports all the extensions I've grown dependent on... #UpgradeWoes
I'm sick of Firefox. I don't want to use Chromium because it is non-free. I use !icecat. Icecat is alright, but I wouldn't mind switching to something simpler. I'm looking for non-Firefox non-webkit browsers, hopefully something that is reasonably well maintained. Any pointers?
GNUzilla is the GNU version of the Mozilla suite, and GNU IceCat is the GNU version of the Firefox browser. Its main advantage is an ethical one: it is entirely free software. While the Firefox source code from the Mozilla project is free software, they distribute and recommend non-free software as plug-ins and addons. Also their trademark license restricts distribution in several ways incompatible with freedom 0. https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/
This release introduces few changes aside of the major upgrade from v38 to v45, which required changes to the branding, aboutIcecat pages, spyblock, internationalization build system and search plugins.
== Changes since v38.8.0ESR == * Updated to v45.5.1ESR * https-everywhere updated to 5.2.7 * Disabled antifeatures: EME, telemetry, flash, search suggestions, Geolocation, GMP, Pocket, and extension signatures. WebRTC tunned to prevent ip leaks over TOR.
#webtorrent needs the #MediaSource API available from Firefox 42 onwards. !icecat is still running version 38 only, and doesn't support the MediaSource API. :-(
@arunisaac@social.systemreboot.net @arunisaac@social.systemreboot.net it looks to me like icecat's developer, Reuben Rodriguez, follows along with whatever #security #updates are relevant to !icecat . However it seems to me that because of how it is built and configured Icecat has a smaller attack surface than #firefox does by default. It is likely even better than Firefox with regards to #security because of it.
