    Is anyone doing a #federated #OpenSource alternative to Meetup.com?

It's useful for local events, but very expensive for organisers ($15 a month for a basic events page). People pay purely because others use it, an open alternative would be 👍

Meetup's "network effect" might be overcome because it isn't a global network (e.g. someone in London is only going to care about meetups in London).

Also, an open alternative would be perfect fit for #federation, each community having its own instance.

@redbookworm I was wondering about that... We really need more solutions like #Protonmail, or better yet, a #federated network of user-friendy #crypto!

Mastodon is wonderful and the concept of #federated #socialmedia is great, but realistically the average person isn’t going to adopt the current form, it’s just too technical to set up, and they are used to polished #frontend experiences.

I have ideas for solving those problems, but I need passionate folks to #help.

Anyone out there crazy enough to work with me on this? Anyone already working on it who’d be willing to hear my ideas?

what is the difference between friendica and hubzilla? #2894

"Hubzilla represents what I like to think of as state of the art in decentralisation technology. It goes far beyond what we did in Friendica when it comes to decentralising core services which used to be available only on centralised silos. We decentralise everything. This builds on work I started in Friendica but it took a platform re-write to fully realise.

Some federation bits were added a couple of years ago due to popular demand, but they are in conflict with a couple of core features such as nomadic identity. Nomadic identity is really special. You can create online clones of your channel and pop up at another site if your current site is having issues (either temporarily or permanently). This works incredibly well - unless you have friends on other networks. My original account has moved a few times now. "

Set the date: May 10-11 #Aardwolf will be taking part in a GLOBAL 48 hour hack.

Whether you know people coding in #Rustlang, can help write basic #documentation, #design engaging Web pages, or simply just amplifying the fact the project exists!

Based on #Mastodon, Aardwolf is seeking to build a #federated alternative to Facebook. It's a huge ask, and it will need people just like us rallying together in support along the way.

This is a pretty big deal for me.

The Federation wrote the following post Mon, 05 Feb 2018 06:58:33 -0800

    Organization news

The Federation info is now a separate organization on #Github, thanks @Zauberstuhl for the idea ?

What does this mean? Well, it would be nice to take in a few more maintainers to ensure the site code gets some desperately needed improvements, for example. There are several things that have been requested by community members which I (Jason Robinson) haven't had time to implement due to work ongoing with #Socialhome.

My personal wish would be to make The-Federation.info even more into a nice landing page for all #TheFederation / #Fediverse projects. This would mean not being constrained to just following servers running the #Diaspora protcol, but also including servers from #ActivityPub and #OStatus side, for example. The information is available out there, if not in exactly the same format, at least to some level.

If you are a #federated social web enthusiast, possibly even a maintainer of one of these projects and interested in improving the site, please get in touch, for example by replying here or chatting on FreeNode #thefederation channel, or directly to me. Please don't use private messages since those are not supported by this account yet.

Not meaning this as a dig... But when people think #federated #forums is a "new idea", I feel really old.

This is like cycle 3 of federated forums for me: UUCP, then USENET, and now...

It seems tech moves in cycles of #centralization to #decentralization to centralization. We never learn the lesson "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Sadly, the cycle last long enough for everyone to forget about the old tech that did the job.

Stop popping up #mastodon #instances in Digital Ocean/AWS...

    You're turning #federated #systems into #SinglePointsOfFailure, all over again.

You can host an instance, from your house! At least pick other providers, or even a #colo.

#PeerTube by @Framasoft is #FLOSS (of course), integrates torrenting, and is also #federated! Couldn't ask for a better a̶l̶t̶e̶r̶n̶a̶t̶i̶v̶e̶ replacement for #Youtube 👏

@gamehawk I try not to make people feel guilt if they still find use for #corpocentric sites. Better to try to improve the utility of #federated sites, so they'll gradually realize these networks meet their needs better.

    Socialhome version 0.5.0 released

Approximately one month since the previous release, #Socialhome 0.5.0 is out with 102 changed files, 2870 insertions and 999 deletions by 2 contributors.

For users there are only a few features added in this release, most of the work being internal refactoring and work in preparation for future features.

Please see the full changelog here.

    New features

A few notes on feature highlights.

    Shares in streams

Shares are now pulled up to the "Followed" stream. What this basically means is that when a person you follow shares something authored by a person you don't follow, the post will be pulled up in your stream by the share action.

Generally, you should only see a single post once. If you follow the author whose content was shared, that content has already been in your stream, and thus a share will not repeat it. Note however that since stream pre-calculation is a new thing, it is possible that content seen in the stream before this feature was added will pop up in a new share once more.

There are still some things to do for shares, these are being tracked in this issue.

    Stream precaching

Related to "shares in streams", there was a lot of refactoring work to create the new base for how all streams function. This includes unifying lots of code and rewriting it so that in addition to pulling content out of the database, we can "precalculate" streams. This is done to ensure streams load super fast even if the calculations on what content the stream has are heavy.

The only stream that is currently precached is the "Followed" stream. Precaching means it will load as fast as the public stream even though we now include shares by non-followed users and include them only once - which would be a heavy calculation to do without precaching. The real benefit will come when custom user defined streams are available.

How would you like to configure the content in your stream?

    GIF uploads

    Yes, we love GIF's <3

    Links in content

All links in content (whether textual, markdown or HTML) are now treated equally. They will all be used as candidates for OEmbed/OpenGraph fetches and all will be processed to add a target="_blank" to the link, forcing it to open in another tab/window.

    Stream URL changes

All stream urls now live under /streams/, so for example followed stream is /streams/followed/. The old url's should still work until they are needed for something else.

    Features coming up

    Vue.js streams

Christophe Henry has been hard at work rewriting the current Django template + #jQuery based streams in #VueJS. The status of that work can be tracked here. We're hoping to replace the current stream frontend with the Vue streams within the coming months. This will drop a lot of legacy code and speed up development of new features, and will also mean our #API is fully complete for the stream features.

    ActivityPub protocol support

This is still something we want to do as soon as some of the basic features are first implemented. Currently it looks like having it before the end of the year is slightly optimistic, but federating with for example #Mastodon using #ActivityPub will be a strong priority to get early next year.

    Docker images

There has been some work on #Docker images to run a Socialhome instance. Will post more info as they are ready.

    What is Socialhome?

Socialhome is best described as a #federated personal profile with social networking functionality. Users can create rich content using Markdown. All content can be pinned to the user profile and all content will federate to contacts in the federated social web. Currently #federation happens using the #Diaspora protocol. Federating using existing protocols means Socialhome users can interact with tens of thousands of other users.

Please check the official site for more information about features. Naturally, the official site is a Socialhome profile itself.
