Cory Doctorow has some interesting takes on why using a copy left license and the Fediverse at the end of his DEF Con 31 talk. But you don't have to scroll to the end, the rest of the talk is nice to listen to as well 😉
Good morning dear Fediverse from Cologne 🌞 where @Free Software Foundation Europe the @LpB NRW and the Volkshochschule Cologne have organized a symposium about "The world after Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. A new generation of the internet?"
@fu I don't know much about #Gitcoin, but I'm sure the anti #cryptocurrency crusaders throughout the #Fediverse and in other #FOSS contexts are going to try to roast #Tor over the hottest flames of hell.
If this gets revised, I hope developers consider what exactly "block", "mute", "silence", and so on mean in current implementations (and consider that some have different terminology for similar functionality) and only then decide what curation & protection functionality is needed and sensible in a federated and / or peer-to-peer network.
Vorher Dont Look Up!!!
The Iris #Nostr client on #Android now has a "block and mute" function, so I've started using that against the #spambots.
Nostr has some great ideas that are way beyond what either #OStatus or #ActivityPub branches of the #Fediverse are doing, but the spam and the fact that there's a really big #Bitcoin "Maxi" faction there are chasing regular people away.
#Meta / #Facebook is building a #Twitter clone under their #Instagram brand. Apparently, there's discussion of various #ActivityPub #Fediverse projects' lead developers signing an NDA and having discussions with them.
The participants appear to be deleting evidence.
I'm not spinning a conspiracy theory. I just don't think Gargron or Dansup have any idea what kinds of restrictions an NDA can contain. They risk long-term damage to their projects and some impact on their careers.
That seems like instance admins are too powerful. This is just a guess, but each community probably has a home instance. That instance's admin could then ban the community or ban people from joining / interacting with that community, even if they're on another instance.
Likely the issue comes from everyone (users and communities) piling onto lemmy.ml.
That said, it has been a frequent complaint that #Fediverse admins have too much power. Networks like #Nostr attempt to remove or dilute such power.
Over the past few days as a result of the recent #twittermigation and all the new #introduction posts I've made numerous comments similar to this, so I figured I'd just make one Pinned Blog post and link to it instead
I first started using the 'verse >10 years ago, back when it was just called "de-centralized microblogging" (which was actually pretty centralized from my recollection of identi.ca being the only instance that really was up more often than it was down) I never really used it as my primary Social Media for big part because I didn't really "get" it, until I gave up Facebook for Lent this year and decided I was finally going to dive all in to GNU Social whether I liked it or not.
Here is what was most helpful for me in understanding how this all works. #ItWorksLikeEmail
your email provider can have its own rules, (like you can't send spam), and you can chose to host your own server(where you make the rules, but most people chose not to), and you can talk to anyone else in the world who has an email address (regardless of whether or not you are both on yahoo.com), and while most people just use it for one thing, it can be used for others (like posting to mail lists, or forums that have integrated mail support)
So is it just #Reddit or all of surveillance capitalism following #Twitter lead to charge for the open API access that had empowered their adoption? #lemmy#fediverse
♲ @kixik@lemmy.ml:
Reddit will begin charging for access to its API
Not sure how that will affect libreddit or teddit. That'd would prevent me to get some news on specific channels, which when interesting enough, I brought to lemmy, 😀
