My use of #Matrix has really plummeted. After the last time that it wiped my bridged #IRC rooms, I decided that it isn't worth the hassle of re-adding them every 30-60 days. So now, have a few Matrix rooms (most of which are completely inactive) and one #Gitter room (bridged, I think, though the plan is for Gitter to speak the Matrix protocol soon).

I left the #Python space and the rooms it contains because one of the admins / moderators was abusive toward a room member.

Though I think they have a lot of stuff they already needed to solve. Trying to fix the #Matrix protocol itself and replace the #Synapse server with something more efficient, while porting features over from #Gitter (both the server and the client ends) is going to increase the strain on their development resources.

The recent migration from #Riot.im to #Element (on Android) is already dissatisfying, as the new client does not have all the capabilities of the old one and also introduced new bugs.

As a regular user of Matrix (who once considered hosting a homeserver), I see this mostly like Mozilla's Eudora mail client announcement several years back: "We already lack the needed resources for this project, so we're going to take on additional responsibilities".

The #Matrix / #Element company is buying #Gitter from #GitLab and merging Gitter features into their Element client.

@clacke has links to the blog post and to an interview about it.

@humanetech sure. But I was asking more specifically what we can infer from the decision by MS to buy a centralized chat platform for their newly acquired code forge, which had only just sold its own one? For example, what might this mean for existing integrations between GH and other chat platforms like #Gitter? Will these be degraded over time, to push GH users onto Spectrum? Also, why did MS buy a tiny beta product like Spectrum, and not buy or partner with Slack?

Weird that GH sold #Gitter, a mature codebase they'd kept proprietary, and which already had a significant user base, and then bought a much newer, #FreeCode chat platform like Spectrum, which is only just out of beta. What can we read between the lines here about the MS for GH going forward?

I just came across #Gitter, apparently #YAMB ( #YetAnotherMicroBlog): https://gitter.im/ Now owned by #GitLab, but it has a repository on #GitHub, and I can't find any source code or license. Has anyone in the !Fediverse used it?
