lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Thursday, 21-Oct-2021 21:01:04 EDT lnxw48a1 Apparently, Trump’s upcoming #socnet, TRUTH.SOCIAL, is based on #Mastodon. Which isn’t a bad decision, but the people managing the project do not know or care enough to follow the licensing requirements of the code, and it is unlikely that Mastodon’s copyright holder(s) and Mastodon GMBH will sue. -

lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Friday, 08-Oct-2021 11:39:54 EDT lnxw48a1 For those who didn't follow the link: malware is using account profiles on socnet servers (specifically mentions #Mastodon) to direct their software to command and control servers. If you think about it, it means that the C2 servers themselves need not be hard-coded into the malware infector software, as they can update the social network site's profile links if a particular C2 server is taken down. -
lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Tuesday, 24-Aug-2021 22:13:01 EDT lnxw48a1 #Pleroma (and I assume #Mastodon) have ‘relays’ built in, where an instance can join other instances’ relays, so that their outgoing traffic is shared with all the other instances that are members of that relay.
The advantage of a relay is that all of an instance’s public posts are automatically shared with other participating instances, where a followbot follows each user individually.
(Another thing that #Diaspora did a long time ago to improve federation.)
Hat Thieves (formerly at hatthiev.es/ but that appears to be gone now) was a group from Spain that was exploring independent and federated services. They operated GS, Mastodon, and Pleroma instances, plus lots of other FOSS but not federated things.
Whenever they opened a new federated instance, they’d immediately start following a bunch of people, to get posts into their network feed. The Masto and Pleroma instances would get angry and mass-block the instance. -
lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Saturday, 31-Jul-2021 20:01:43 EDT lnxw48a1 Apparently, people are pretty upset about the new #Mastodon for #iOS app.
It is definitely much more limited than similar apps ... I think it reflect's Eugen's vision of what the mobile Mastodon experience should be like. There are other apps available, even if they all stink.
For what it does, it is probably one of the better apps, but there are plenty of limits, such as:
* no unlisted posts
* no local timeline
* no federated timeline
* shows the joinmastodon.org signup list, but does not permit browsing the local timelines to help with choosing an instance.
* bug where autofilled @ mentions end up in the form "@username@username@instance.tld .tld" (including that space before the repeated TLD extension) -
lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Saturday, 10-Jul-2021 15:23:26 EDT lnxw48a1 I know that Gargron was invited to participate and even paid some amount of EURO, but I recall he said he did not integrate #Eunomia into #Mastodon.
My impression is that there were some API hooks that could be used for their "social credit" system, and that those may have been enhanced. However, that is just my impression and not documented fact.
I also get the impression that Eunomia is not just about the #Fediverse--they would like to eventually hook into #corpocentric #socnets also--and that Fediverse-related activities pretty much stalled out years ago. -
lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Tuesday, 25-May-2021 12:58:48 EDT lnxw48a1 @musicman I know #django moved to LiberaChat, but #python is still debating it. #haskell is moving also. I also checked #nim, but I did not see any discussion about moving.
Neither Evan nor Alex have expressed an opinion about moving #pump.io, so I suspect it will remain on Freenode. I checked #hubzilla, but there doesn’t appear to have been any discussion about it. I left #friendica after someone set up a really noisy bridgebot, so I don’t know whether they’re moving. I also left #mastodon
Freenode is the official IRC host for the GNU project, so a lot of GNU software is awaiting a decision from GNU.
(All hashtags above are names of Freenode IRC channels / rooms, some of which are in the process of moving to Libera.Chat or OFTC.) -
lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Wednesday, 19-May-2021 12:32:40 EDT lnxw48a1 The #Freenode takeover happened. https://blog.bofh.it/debian/id_461
The time may come for !gnusocial, #Friendica, #Mastodon, and other Fediverse software to move their #IRC channels to a different network. Hopefully, we can discuss and co-ordinate that move. -

Linux Walt (@lnxw37a1) (lnxw37a1@loadaverage.org)'s status on Thursday, 24-Sep-2020 17:16:24 EDT Linux Walt (@lnxw37a1) @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage The weirdest thing is that #Twitter in the early days was a hotbed of real discussions, despite not having any real conversational features built in. Over time, a combination of too-rapid growth and their changes to the site made it so that conversation is painful (and prone to attract angry extremists who flock into one's mentions and immediately mark the person as part of $OTHER_GROUP.
And that's where many of #Mastodon's angry extremists learned how to coordinate and attack, so they can be really brutal to the unprepared. -

lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Thursday, 23-Jul-2020 14:43:40 EDT lnxw48a1 An article I recently read talked about the copyright battles of the late 1990s as instructive to what #decentralized, #federated and #peer-to-peer networks will face if and when we become threatening to the big #corpocentric networks. I think it is something we need to think about.
Unfortunately, some parts of the #Fediverse (primarily, but not exclusively #Mastodon) have marketed themselves with promises of privacy, control, immunity from recourse, and personal security that none of these networks (nor the protocols they use) were ever designed to provide. The article looked at that as failure, instead of recognizing it for what it was: marketing & advertising puffery.
