@mala I've been using #Mate since it replaced #GNOME Fallback as the default desktop for #Trisquel. I'm very happy with it, even on a 10 year old 32-bit netbook bought with XP on it. I shudder to think what it would be like trying to run a newer Windows OS on it. Without desktop GNU/Linux, I'd probably have to buy a newer 2nd hand laptop every couple of years to have a useable PC.
@johnnynull Dayum. I've enjoyed using #Kubuntu in a VM. The taskbar seems much more useful and beautiful than I'm used to in #MATE, which I use primarily. I tried to install #KDE alongside my MATE install and it acts weird for since reason — quite unlike in the VM. @lnxw48a1
I'm using #Mate as well, and it works for me, but I am visually dependent. #Jami offers no clues about keystroke shortcuts, and doesn't have the standard "File, Edit, Options, Help" style menu. It does not seem to have any navigation accessibility.
So 18.04 LTS is the last version of Lubuntu that can be recommended for use with older PCs. #Trisquel 9 will be based off 18.04 LTS, and I presume #Mate will remain the default desktop. Trisquel 8 is what I run (for now) on an ancient 32-bit Acer netbook
@tootbrute love to know how it works out for you. What's the specs of your Acer? Mine is a netbook I bought in 2010. I've upgraded the hard drive to an #SSD (which makes the world of difference on any computer), and doubled the RAM to 2GB. #Trisquel 8 (with #Mate) runs great on it.
@noorul@saturno if you like to use the most up-to-date packages, and you don't mind surfing the bleeding edge a bit, there's always #DebianTesting. I used #LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) for a while, which is Testing with a #Mint desktop (#Cinammon or #Mate), and a bit of extra testing by the Mint community. It was an excellent combo of recent software and a very stable desktop experience.
@Scarabeater@frickhaditcoming if you like #KDE, #Cinnamon might be more your speed. #Mate is intended more for older or less powerful hardware, or people who want to use a minimal DE and save their processing power for the apps they run on it. Both are forks (?) of #GNOME 2 which were started by the #Mint distro when GNOME 3 came out, and massively increased the resource footprint of GNOME (mostly for Ubuntu's benefit).
@alcinnz AppStream? Good question, no idea. Trisquel is based off #Ubuntu, and has everything Ubuntu has minus the non-free stuff, and with #Mate instead of #Unity/ #GNOME. I'm still using Trisquel 7, which was based off 14.04, but most folks are already on 8, based off 16.04. The devs are now working on 8, which will be based off 18.04, so that would be the release to target for possible inclusion (at least in the repo).
#Linux#MATE Query My compy crashed and had to reboot, after which Linux (systemd?) silently asked (no debug dump) if I wanted to let it try to fix errors. After, yes, it booted up fine... Except ~/.config/MATE/stickynotes-applet.xml has been wiped clean, without my recent compy notes! Any ideas how and where to restore that file? It's never done this before. Thanks heaps.
