To elaborate on this, here's an algorithm how to DDoS someone and break the Matrix network at the same time:
* Get a domain
* Get a wildcard certificate
* Spawn a stripped down instance with $randomname.yourdomain.org that can only talk to matrix.org.
* Send a join to #matrix:matrix.org
* Redirect $randomname.yourdomain.org to your target you want to DDoS
* Kill the instance, repeat with another $randomname
Now 2000 - 5000 servers will constantly hammer your target with TLS handshakes.

I would love to see this scene recreated but making the allusions real. Imaging a blind druid meeting with a forest tree god. Roots rise up out of the ground to support the druid-hero. Then as the data/spirit carrying root rises up out of the ground the mycelia sprout from it to meld with the hero's nervous system. Kind of like if #Tolkien wrote the #Matrix
XMPP server
Mastodon unfortunately does not allow to change the nickname .. Currently, we intend to abandon the use of #XMPP in the nickname.Time to say goodbye to @xmpp nickname.
When the #matrix server becomes usable, we will launch the matrix server. Now the Matrix consumes too many resources and it is impossible to start the matrix server.
We are not going to disable the XMPP server, just change the nickname to the mastodon

I think you're overstating your case here, to the point of misleading people. AFAIK Riot *itself* isn't non-free, it's desktop apps have a non-free dependency; #Electron. Actually Electron itself isn't non-free either, it also has a non-free dependency; #Chromium. Actually #Chromium itself isn't non-free either, it just has some dependencies whose license situation is unclear.
