@pskoskinski@mstdn.io @kaikatsu Yep. Some public homeservers have shut down over the amount of maintenance needed and the resource consumption. That's why I can't tell any specific person they should self-host #Synapse, but the #Matrix network does need more servers and to have the network's users dispersed more widely among those servers.
– the attacker exploited vulnerabilities in Jenkins – the attacker had full database access, including access to unencrypted content like private messages, passwords hashes, access tokens – Matrix.org recommends changing your password (including NickServ password)
I think the best thing for the #Matrix network is for more people to #self-host. I’m not saying you or any specific person should do so, because even I don’t currently host #Synapse.
If you were impacted by the #matrix outage please consider standing up a Synapse instance and help decentralize. I've been running one for a couple of weeks and it is stable, low-maintenance software so far.
@matrix if I decide to run my own homeserver, is there any way to redirect traffic for my matrix.org account to my new mxid? Or do I have manually notify my contacts of the new address (as I would for email)?
I did have a quick search but couldn't see much docs either way. I just don't want people to try and talk to me and get zero response :)
My dream is to use only one foss and decentralized messenger for everything. With @matrix this seems possible now. I'm currently chatting with people on:
and I'm using only FluffyChat. Not everything is working 100% fine and there is still a lot of work to do. That's why I'm still using Telegram on my phone too.
What I would like to have: -WhatsApp bridge without the need of an extra device -XMPP&Telegram direct chats -SMS bridge
So our group of enthusiasts in the office decided to switch to #Matrix for our lunch-coordination group. The signup process was... rocky at best. I received several error messages and had to redo the thing once. Then when it came to selecting an app for it, the first one I tried was unmaintained, the next two both couldn't send encrypted messages, and finally I took the #Riot#Electron app.
So thanks again to all the people who have been pushing me to switch away from #Signal. Maybe in a year.
@moonman @clacke I liked #Mattermost in the very limited place I tried it out. It was just the lack of active users that caused me to close the account.
#Riot (or perhaps #Synapse; somewhere in the #Matrix ecosystem) is still too alpha to be recommendable. It is obvious that both of them are inspired by something else that I have not seen or used ( Possibly #Slack? ) which probably does all the same things.
"Use X; it is the same thing but slightly different" doesn't seem to work very well as a way of persuading people.
@dwaltiz I think #Matrix in general is being used less except for some large special-interest rooms and some rooms about specific Matrix server or client software.
The other thing that Matrix is good for, accessing #IRC via the Matrix-IRC bridge, is hampered by the bridge failing to complete login when it reconnects.
🍾🍾🍾 FluffyChat 11 is in the OpenStore: https://open-store.io/app/fluffychat.christianpauly With improved stability and performance, new translations, design changes, better tablet support and a lot of bug fixes.
@alexl@stragu no, it isn't. #XMPP is much more advanced than #Matrix when it comes to server performance. But what's key is whether the company recognises that having servers they control at the centre of the entire service is a bad idea (#SinglePointOfFailure) or not. Wire does. Telegram hasn't even released their server code.
